Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I think it's just a case of remove old one, plug new one in and ring Virgin to activate it on your account.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
I finally managed to drag the computer away from my wife last night and post in the VM newsgroups.
Was quite late so no reply by the time I went to bed, but just logged onto the My Virgin Media pages and it says 10Mb M whereas last night it still said 2Mb M
Have to see what I get when I get home, can't get newsgroups here at work, so see what they say about a new modem, currently got the ntl 120 modem.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Was going to post an update last night, but we had a power cut!
Anyway, this was the reply in the newsgroups:
I have configured it for the 10 meg now please run the test again and
let us know how you get on. The modem you have should be fine with the 10
meg.
Strange how some people get told the ntl 120 will need replacing, other get told it will be fine.
Did some speed tests yesterday evening, and just done one this morning, and getting 5Mb:
It's almost constantly that speed on any speed test, and if I'm wireless or directly connected to the modem.
Did manage to post this back on the newsgroups last night before the power went.
Wait to see what they say.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Perhaps the uncertainty regarding whether the ntl 120 modem is capable of 10Mb/s may be explained by the Chetnet website.
To quote their information on the ntl:home 100/120/200 modems:
Quote:
All do support 10Mbps Tier of Service, provided that they are used with an "003" or greater version of firmware.

Because that ping is a random figure subject to all kinds of inaccuracy that doesn't actually mean anything

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Well no sign of being sent a new modem yet.
Latest posts from the newsgroup said they can't see any network problems, and asking me to post power levels, guess I should have done that before anyway
Quote:
As I can see no issues from our end there seems to be a local issue. Can you
provide your current power levels.
Also it may be an idea to tweak your network card settings ans sometimes
these can restrict speeds somewhat.

Still at a rock solid 5Mb
Actually, how about I post my levels here...
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : 64 QAM
Downstream Receive Power Level : 2.93 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 34.88 dB
Upstream Frequency : 25800000 Hz
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 46.00 dBmv

Try at different periods of the day, and if you find the speed is the same, then you may need to get VM to check things out.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this further advice VMboy. After trying further game downloads with poor results I decided to join Newsgroups and posted my problem. Like MikeyB I am now awaiting the arrival of a new 256 modem to replace my aged Ntl:Home 100. I was advised that this was up to the job when I registered but it seems there can be issues with both this and the 120.
Thanks again.

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg
Hatfield has now been added to the list of places ready to upgrade now! However, my package is still showing as 2Mb. Can i expect that to change soon? I guess i wait for my package to change to 10Mb before i can get the new speeds?? Any advice?
