Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
Tried to search forum and have not found anything useful, though I appreciate this subject is probably of marginal interest to the most: my business will need some serious connectivity and I am looking at all options, highly annoying Telewest business does not publish prices or anything of this nature online - can anyone in the know spill some beans? Private Message is fine too.
I am interested in 20 Mbits+ service, ideally one that can be quickly upgraded up to 50-100 Mbits.
I am going to call them for sure but I'd like to gather some info on what to expect before I get into hassle with them.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
From experience when I called NTL:Business a year ago, it was ~£1200/month for 10Mbps/10Mbps, which can easily be upgraded to 100Mbps. Installation was ~£1500. You get the usual static IP's etc, etc.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
£1200 seems a bit too much for 10 Mbits, I wonder what's the price like for 50-100 Mbits, surely not 5-10 times more?
They seem to be doing this National Ethenet thingy, anyone knows how that differs from normal leased lines?

Actually, it's not a lot for a leased line. Remember that with that leased line, you get 1:1 contention, whereas it's supposedly 20:1 (although this varies a lot from area to area, and I suspect it's a lot higher than 20:1 in some areas) with residential and business cable broadband.
Edit: Just found this: http://www.newnet.co.uk/leasedlines/
They are charging anywhere between 2 and 4 grand a year for a two meg leased line, so £14,400 is probably in line with those charges..

Ethernet is their equivalent of a leased line, its direct Ethernet into your premises. As above it is 1:1 contention, you really do pay for that premium.
This quote came direct from NTL:Business about 12 months ago when I was getting a quote for a company the place I worked was doing a job for.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
Yes I understand it will be a lot more than consumer price, however this seems a lot compared to their competitors who offer leased lines for £500-800 per month giving 25-100 Mbits.
ta for info guys - if anyone knows more please post here or PM me if you can't/don't want to disclose this info.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
Its likely those won't be guaranteed speeds and not 1:1 contention. You should check. Some I have seen advertised as 10Mbps are 2Mbps guaranteed with 10Mbps burst, for example.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
Bear in mind it says from £800/month, check the terms and conditions etc, you'll probably find its contended etc.

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
Isnt a 1:1 line by the look of it.
Also
# The standard service is unprotected with protection offered for an additional charge on request.
# The service is not available to customers providing hosted services to their clients
# The service is not available when the customer B end is a data centre or hosting facility.
So the latter 2 show this isnt for hosting a web server or anything methinks.
EDIT: Has a SLA, im just being stupid!

Yes these clauses a bit funny, but I don't think they'll apply to us. I'd gladly pay 50% premium for Telwest though, but my feeling is that their prices will be out of this world...

Give em a call and find out
You know, what would you do with a symmetrical connection for business use other than hosting a service.
All I can think of is SSH/VNC/VPN :/

I will do for sure on Monday - found them yesterday after few drinks in a pub and could not locate them today, thought I dreamed up those prices
We need good upstream to send large data sets to our clients, maybe that qualifies as data center in their scale of things? I would not mind paying 50% more on their price so long as it's allowed, maybe they'll take flexible view given state of the economy - any sale now is good...

Re: Leased line / Managed Internet Access question
One of the things to remember is that the Managed Internet Access product from ntl:Telewest is monitored 24/7 by a specialist operations centre in Peterborough and the Cisco router is fully managed. The product is also backed by a 6hr SLA and is provided by a company with their own network unlike one mentioned above (won't say which one ;p) that actually have national ethernet circuits managed by the same operations centre and act like a intermediary.

Sure, I'd love Telewest to offer competitive quote (50% premium is fine by me), but if they are 5-10 times more expensive then
