I am using windows xp, the pc I think is about 5 years old, thanks.

I have also looked in device manager and checked all the usb ports and usb root hubs and they all say no problems detected when I go on properties, although there is a box that can be clicked that says troubleshoot, but Im not sureif I should try, as I say Im not very technical.

Re: Usb ports

Thanks for the welcome, the crashing has happened with a camera and a wireless dongle thing the kids use, the only thing it seems to like is an mp3 player and a phone, as for the USB chipset I will try to find it, please bear with me this could take some time.

---------- Post added at 17:40 ---------- Previous post was at 17:34 ----------

I have entered device manager but Im not sure which heading will give me the info you need, I can see General, Advance, Driver, Details & Resources, and some other info when properties is clicked.

Re: Usb ports

you are on XP arent you... if so if you look under USB Controllers the 1st entry should tell you something like this (only on intel chips, but sis,via and nvidia) shall show the same.

mine is from Vista but afaik its still the same, cant check as I havent got XP around me now.

Re: Usb ports

I have gone on the 1st entry, it says SIS PCI 7001 to usb open host controller, is that what you needed, thanks.

---------- Post added at 18:01 ---------- Previous post was at 17:56 ----------

Sorry have forgot to put other info on, there are 2 of the above, & 1 SIS PCI TO USB ENHANCED HOST CONTROLLER, & 3 USB ROOT HUB.

Re: Usb ports

okay...now would you be able to find out what kind of motherboard you have...as the SIS usb chipset is normally quite poor and often needs driver updates on it due to crashing and the likes.

Re: Usb ports

Hi, someone has suggested it might be, that the +5v rail is weak and to have it repaired, any ideas as to how much it would cost, just to give me some idea before I take it for repair, many thanks.

Re: Usb ports

you want the easy way or the hard way?

easy download this application (http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) and go to Computer you should see the motherboard details in there if the pc is about 2 years old
hard way... open up your pc and look for the motherboard numbers.....

The amount of stuff that app will tell you is amazing, and somewhat worrying (it can display saved passwords and stuff, makes you relise just how insecurly some apps save paswords )

Very handy though as it will give you information on the make and model of the motherboard.etc but please do Read it before blindly using copy/paste
