Really Strange Problem

ok i am currently running windows xp 64bit, on friday i reinstalled my copy of vista ultimate 64bit started playing a game of call of duty 4 and my system crashed twice, but it had been running fine for everything else all day even when playing call of duty 5 and crysis.

ok an hour later i was back on to xp 64bit everything works great can play games, never crashes etc but i decided yesterday i wanted to see if it was just a dodgy install of cod 4 that caused it, i reinstalled vista after doing a backup of my xp install here's where the issue starts, i was playing cod4/ cod5/ crysis/ unreal tournament 3/half life 2 all played fine with no issue's all day then at 8pm, i went to play cod 4 again and my pc crashed so i rebooted and again it crashed so i tried another game, and it worked fine so i tried cod 4 again and it crashed so i tried another game again and it crashed aswell so now i am back on my xp install.

now i'm thinking that it is driver issue's but does anyone else have any idea's,
also just to add it does the same while overclocked and not overclocked specs below.

Mobo: Asus striker ii extreme NB watercooled
Cpu: Intel Q9450 oc'd @ 3.6ghz watercooled
Ram: Ocz ddr3 1333mhz oc'd @ 1600mhz
Gpu: 2x Bfg nvidia gtx280's sli'd watercooled not oc'd
Psu: coolermaster 1000w modular
Hdd's: 1x WD velociraptor 300gb 10,000rpm 2x samsung 1tb 7200rpm

as i say it all works fine on xp64 but under vista it crash's the reason i want to get back to vista is because, it doesn't perform that well under xp can
't multi task aswell under xp.

i hope someone has a idea as it's got me stumped.

Re: Really Strange Problem

anything in event viewer for the time of the crash. What sort of crash is it? a freeze?
If it only crashes on CoD4 then its a compat issue I imagine solution would be a dual boot system just run XP for the game and do everything else under Vista

Re: Really Strange Problem

nothing shows up in event viewer other than it says previous shutdown was unexpected or something, similar the only issue with your theory zing is that it has worked for months under vista it's just when, i started having the issue i just went to xp64 about to start looking in to it gonna do a reinstall of vista now to see if i can sort it out.

Re: Really Strange Problem

i was running it fine for months then i had a issue couldn't figure it out so went to xp64.
just been playing cod 4 for nearly 2 hours with no probs so im going to start loading my progs on but no updates and see what happens, if it's still fine then i will do the update's but no driver updates and then see what happens i think to be honest that it is microsoft's drivers for sound and video.

Re: Really Strange Problem

i was gonna suggest downgrading ur video drivers. I had a similar problem once on a game on my pc after installing the Nvidia own drivers, when i went to the manufacturers website of my video card and downloaded from there it had a BOLD MESSAGE stating that the release numbers of certain NVidia drivers on the Nvidia site were incompatible with my card. When i downloaded the manufacturers own and installed it cured my problem.
