50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED - Page 6

ok after a senior engineer come out yestaday and done a few tests logged into some kind ov virgin test site 50mb while on the phone to another enginer pressing buttons i guess to make it look good lol all seemed good hitting 49MB.HOWEVER i do understand its up to 50MB depending on where u download from. when i showed him that newsgroups giganews in this issue maxes it out then slowly drops to a 3mb he couldnt explain ok i said il do a torrent from a very highly seedy souce which ive used for years ok 4.5MB instant not even connected to all seeds suddenly speed drops to a discusting 400kb lol
to which he states it MUST BE GIGANEWS AND MY TORRENT SITE SEVERS CANT SUPPLY THE BANDWIDTH (BS) and said its a routing problem where im downloading from?
can some 1 tell me how to do a tracroute from where i download from to see where the problem lies and who its down to? only been a probley sinse i upgraded

ive now come to think VM throttling all my torrents and newgroup as this is all i have problems with they also took all mac address from my machines maybe they can capp them idk?

theres more guess what it reads today as im doing a speed test while the other guy aint on the phone pressing buttons

To test if there is a problem at your end download some of this file from the VM server.

ftp://debian.virginmedia.com/mirrors...md64-DVD-1.iso

I average 5.5MB/s for the whole file using one connection with wget (Linux). Once I go out into the World at large speeds are hit and miss.

1.87MB download so is there a problem????

Well, let's just say it is less than I was getting on the 20Mb/s tier. You will have to keep on at them as there is definitely a problem.

Seems Most peculiar how the Speed drops at or after 3 Gb It does exactly the same here!! so I phoned VM and they did various tests and said the problem was with Newsdeom!!. so they mad me do another test whilst also only getting 4.5 mb from Newsdemon ans hahaha was only then getting 8 MB so a total of 14.5Mb so they then admitted that there was a problem and they would look into it!!!! LMAO Any way What I do now is Reboot PC and Modem a couple of times and then its all ok for the next 3 Gb.

So the fun begins I run an N rated laptop and until last week I was able to download from astraweb and giganews at over 6 mbps now iam lucky to get 4 no matter what time I Try It appears to me that VM are clearly throttling usenet now and it looks like this is only th begining,

ok back on the phone to VM who tell me to do tests which i do and still get very poor speed from gamefiles.virginmedia.com or whatever it is next he tells me heres gana update my modem tcp or somthink like that .so next i tell him im gana download 1 ov my files from a trusted souce linux dvd which instantly maxes it out 48MB drops to 3.5MB cant explain. so next he tells me download from a vm site think it was fuller.zen.com/test and i got a MASSIVE 41KB yep 41kb so i say as u can see there is clearly a problem nope

whats so good about my modem stats why cant i have them or wwould this expose there capping my speed???

Hi,

I have the exact same problem - I am on 50mb and have been since a few days after launch.

Approx. 10 days ago whenever I downloaded a lot from usenet, I am signed up to giganews and astraweb, over 3-5 gb my speed gets greatly reduced. Usually get between 0.8-1.5mb/s with every other website barely working.

I have tried this with and without a router connected and also called them up and everytime they say there is no problem!

This is getting very frustrating. They are definitely doing something! I feel your pain.

Giganews can handle 50 meg It was for me until last week nothing has changed on my configuration but my downloads have dropped by nearly 2mbps I think there download test does not give an accurate reading because of the size of the file,I had the exact same problem with the virginmedia 50 Meg speedtest site my connection would only reach top speeds when I downloaded larger files

It looks like VM have started STM already. Even I didn't think they would do it that early.

Your best bet is to downgrade to 20 or 10 meg and save yourself some money. If they try to hold you to an 18 month contract just point out that the service is either broken or they change the original terms of the contract (which was for unlimited 50 meg) and you do not agree to the new terms, so the contract is now void.

If they still won't let you, just cancel the direct debit and wait for them to phone you. No point wasting hours with low level drones. Strangely when there is a billing problem you get to speak to someone with a clue right away.

perhap we ought to phone up virgin and tell them that 50Mbps isn't on STM but what are the limit of download per day (6gb or 12gb before they hit us hard and slow us down ?)

They wouldn't tell us because they expect us all to sign up 50Mb and pay extra money and expect to get around 50Mbps but if it was below 20Mbps or less with 28 days we have every right to cancel it because I sign up 50Mbps and they say to me "Before you agreement into 12 months contract, your 50Meg could be down no less than 45Mbps during busy time but there is no STM on it for a while unless we change or add it, is that ok with you?".
