Not been trying failsafes just yet. I will though in a few.

Just a quick follow up on what have happened with this problem.

Even though I can't be totally sure, the current facts tells me that my IDE controller is indeed dead

I plugged in a SATA optical drive today and everything is working fine (so far)

well least it wasnt an expensive fix. You could buy yourself an atapi compliant PCI Ide controller and run the old optical off that and have 2
