Re: 50Mb areas
Thanks for the responses. It looks like I have nothing to worry about concerning latency :-) I really was hoping that the ping times would be better on the 50Mb service, and from the replies above it looks like that will be the case :-)
Just got to wait until my area finally gets upgraded now.

Re: 50Mb areas
Does 50mbit connections use delayed ack packets, sending more ack together in one go. If so does that add significant latency to ping times, or are the delays so small that you would not realistically notice?

ICMP based pings (all Windows stuff) don't use acks, neither do UDP based games.
50Mbit does not do any TCP stack diddling at this time.

Re: 50Mb areas
Considering you say it would be used while you're on your holidays - it may be worth mentioning that 50mb broadband establishes a new 12 month contract. Something to take into consideration atleast.

Anyone know when Southampton will be recieving the 50MB upgrade? We are usually right at the bottom of the list on most things with VM lol.

Re: 50Mb areas
Just a quick message to say thanks to the folks updating this with the available areas. I'm checking here a couple of times a week to see when York is upgraded and just thought I'd let you know the information is appreciated.

Re: 50Mb areas
Southampton isn't usually at the bottom of the list, although it should be (the mess left by the franchises in this area must have been a nightmare to tidy up).

Well I don't mean literally the last place, but is usually one of the last places as far as I know but I could be wrong... How come you think it should be? o.O

As per the other dozens of posts asking when x area will receive the upgrade no, no-one knows

It wasn't trivial, and is still incomplete. That the first tidy up had its' budget hugely cut, its' scope hugely reduced, and was misused didn't help either.
Are you aware of the technical issues surrounding the area specifically or did you just hear that the network was dodgy?

Just curious but is there any logical order the upgrades work to?
Or is it daft to suggest that Virgin Media operate any form of logic when it comes to this type of thing?

I have absolutely no idea to be honest with you, nor does anyone else on this forum, beyond the obvious that some areas where upgrade is more difficult will be delayed.

Not especially, I remember the videotron parts were repulled, (even in some cases to the premises).
In areas of eastleigh, there still isn't digital TV available. (so I have been led to believe).

There wasn't wholesale coaxial repulling, it largely focussed around optical work, fibre pulls and amplifier swap outs. There are still areas of Southampton itself where there's no digital TV.

O.o I didn't know that. I remember a year or two ago when my connection and TV went completely dead, they had to actually get the cable from underground, and replace it on my road. There were roadworks when they started this so not sure if they had to actually dig up the road to get to the cable.
