Re: internet timing out

So if you've not called a center or posted on the groups to make VM aware you have a problem, then how do they know you have a problem and then fix it?

Sort it out man!

Re: internet timing out

Your power levels are fine, your modem logs mean nothing.
Have you alerted VirginMedia to your issue when you have no connection.

Do any of the lights change on the modem when your connection drops?
Do you have to reboot the modem to gain a connection?
Do you have to reboot your PC to gain a connection?
Do you get any errors, E.G a network cable is unplugged?
Have you tried to borrow a laptop/PC to test the theory that its not your PC, thus giving you something to present VM TSC with?
Are you using a router?
And if so have you tried with a direct connection?

Not helping us help you are you.

Re: internet timing out

Thos sounds like exactly the same problem that I'm experiencing at the moment. Connection drops out after 15-20 minutes use. Reboot of either modem or computer re-establishes it.

I've just had a VM engineer visit. He witnessed the problem actually occurring, but wasn't able to definitively diagnose it. "Stumped" and "baffled" were 2 of the word he used.

A bit of googling has alerted me to the fact that there seems to be a known compatibility problem between Windows Vista and some modems/routers. Various other possible solutions are recommended - disabling TCP auto-tuning, disabling internet connection sharing. I've done these, and still have the problem. The engineer is going to call me back later today to see how things are going (5-stars for this engineer, by the way!!). I'm going to tell him about the compatibility issue and see where we go from there.

Has anyone else out there experienced this problem??

Re: internet timing out

I have had this problem too , everything has been fine utill late last week when i noticed my 20mb connection was getting worse , and now all i seem to do is reboot the dam modem , i have been using vista for over a year with no problems whatsoever i also bought a netgear WNR2000 router that too has been fine , i know for a fact its not my pc or the router as i have done various test with different pc's with and without routers and its Virgin media's dam crappy network , to me it seems since 50mb has come out more problems have started ( well for me anyway ) because for years my net connection has always been spot on and i have never had to complain to them about my speed until now which i will do at the weekend in a polite way ofcourse !

Re: internet timing out

Yep, me too, timeouts all over the place. My PC is clean, I don't use wireless, I don't excessively download and generally speaking over the years my connection has been rock solid so I'm not a VM hater. It's just not working. I've reported it.

It may be too soon to judge but it might be that the 'free' 4mb to 10mb upgrade may have come with baggage. There's no such thing as a free lunch eh?

Re: internet timing out

It just so happened that earlier this week I had been considering leaving VM completely and moving over to O2 for broadband and BT for phone. As I am a current O2 mobile customer, the deal I was being offered was pretty good. I gave VM a call to let them know that I was considering this, and was offered a much improved deal to my current one.

Included in that deal was a wireless router which arrived yesterday.

In the course of my investigations into what was going on with my connection, I discovered that there is a known compatibility problem between Windows Vista and some USB devices, including modems and routers. This is something to do with the default settings in Vista's Power Plans, which send spurious signals to USB devices causing them to disconnect or reset periodically.

So, if you are having intermittant disconnect problems, ask yourself these questions: 1) Do I use Vista as my operating system, and 2) Is my modem/router connected to my computer via USB?

If the answer to both of these question are Yes, the solution may be as simple as changing your connector cable from USB to ethernet. I had to do that yesterday when installing my new wireless router. To test things out, I set some downloads running last night before I went to bed. When I checked this morning, they were still running away quite happily.

I'm actually beginning to think that my problem is solved (knock on wood).
