How good are old films in HD (Blu Ray)

Every big Film company i.e Warner Brothers and Fox have been scanning all their old films at 4K before mastering the Blu-Ray or other HD versions. Same goes for the older films like The Thing and Close Encounters which look stunning on Blu-Ray.

they are i quite agree but there are a massive amount of films owned by smaller companies that are not doing that

cant find the article i read on this ( was a while back might remember later lol ) but if you look here you can see the resolutions allowed on blu ray disc

look for "Technical specifications"

that shows how low a resolution can be put on a blu ray disc and due to 720 being clased as HD ( how that was allowed is beyond me ) it can still be sold as high def


got agree the "Close Encounters" version was great and you got a choice on which version you wanted to watch "Blade Runner" was great too

Reason I wondered about old films is I wanna be picky about stuff I already have on DVD - Bladerunner as a good example - and no way I am getting them again if they don't look that much different. However, I wanna cut back on getting new stuff on standard DVD that I know will benefit from BR.

Well 720p is HD so of course its allowed, however remember that a lot of films will have the movie in 1080p and a lot of the bonus features are still in standard def. So there is nothing wrong with normal SD stuff on Blu-Ray however every disc I have seen shows the main feature in 1080p

Well I suggest most Big Budget action/sci fi films look great as do all CG movies. For now I have stopped buying DVDs and only buy in Blu-Ray now. Will not be replacing all my DVDs yet though(over 450)
