Well, the keynote will be online at http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/ later.

Seems us lucky iPhone 3g users may also get MMS.

Gah, It's not ready yet. "Later today" for Apple means "3am in the Morning" for me. I want it before I go to work tommorow.

Major points so far are
  • push alerts. Applications can use Apple's servers to push alerts on to user's screens.
  • Application access to Bluetooth and Dock. No word (yet) on improved bluetooth support for users, but Apps can use it to communicate with each other.
  • Embeddable Google Maps. Applications can now use maps directly.
  • An added API for turn by turn directions. This should help the likes of Tom Tom port applications to the iPhone. Doesn't sound like turn by turn directions will be part of Google Maps though.
  • Cut, Copy and Paste. Yep, the one killer feature for most is here. Apparently the way the iPhone does it is quite intelligent as well.
  • We also now have Spotlight on the iPhone.

Yes! Stereo Bluetooth is supported! No word on whether remote control support is included though.
FINALLY Apple have listened to users! I'm well impressed with the bluetooth stereo addition, it was the one thing that I NEEDED as I listen to music in the Gym and wires are annoying! Also means I can treadmill etc and talk :d

What I don't understand is why is MMS restricted to iPhone 3G users?? MMS doesn't require 3G for it to work, and would work perfectly well over EDGE/GPRS!!

I don't MMS Often but it would be useful for us iPhone Gen1 users.

re: The iPhone thread

Behold, innovative features such as... MMS, Copy & Paste, Bluetooth A2DP, & SMS forwarding!

Heh. About time

Most of the other stuff sounds good too.

Personally, I don't give a monkey's about MMS. I rarely ever used it on any of my previous phones. But, it is still something that many many people use - more so than mobile email. And it's something present on even the most basic camera phone...

Copy & Paste, SMS forwarding, & landscape keyboard are my most anticipated features.

Apparently the original iPhone doesn't have the right kind of radio chip.

Which still sounds a bit odd though...As you say, MMS doesn't need 3G, it works fine over plain old GPRS.

re: The iPhone thread

Just read this on the foot of the official page

  • Some features and services may not be available in all areas.
  • * MMS messaging is available only on iPhone 3G; fees may apply. MMS may not be available in all areas.

WTF, fees might apply, like we're not paying enough, they introduce / make available what the phone should have ( nearly ) and then say pay for it. I might be looking around come contract renewal if that's the case.

re: The iPhone thread

I took the "fees may apply" statement to mean something along the lines of "fees may apply depending on your cellular network provider", i.e. You can send MMS, but O2/AT&T/etc. may charge you whatever it is that they happen to charge.[So with O2, if it's like with any other phone or tariff, it would simply be 1 MMS = 4 SMS].

That's just an assumption, of course, but it makes sense to me. I can't see even Apple being so cheeky as to charge additional fees to use something such as MMS...I hope...

Oh... an App question...

Does anyone have a favourite currency conversion app they'd recommend?

Doesn't need loads of features... just £<>$ & exchange rate updates.

I use an app called Measures. It's a paid app and converts all sorts of measurements including currency. Might be a bit overkill for you tho.

There are report of people sharing the iPhone 3.0 beta and non-developer phones refusing to activate on the AT&T network in America. So if your on the O2 contract, be wary of installing unofficial firmwires.
