Fetch - you request your updates (either scheduled or on request).
Push - they get sent to you when they arrive at the server.

Although they can appear (from the handset user's point of view) to be the same thing.

Been looking around the app store. Some brlliant apps (both free and paid for).

So far I can recommend Jiwire's Wifi Finder, which uses GPS to determine your location and finds nearby WiFi hotspots. The database it uses isn't entirely up to date (it lists pubs in my home town that have been closed a while), but it is good if you want to find a WiFi Hotspot near.

I can also recommend Malcolm Barclay's TubeStatus which gives a quick list of any problems on any of the London Underground Lines (and DLR), and is free. Tube Deluxe is 59p and adds the ability to display a tube map, and find your nearest tube station using GPS and either the Tube map or Google Maps. Could be handy for those drunken nights out. Wish someone would do one for National rail.

The nearest I have found is iRail. This allows you to look up train times for any european overground railway network, and does the same thing as national rail's journey planner. Would still be nice to have the option to find your nearest station by GPS though. A few times, I have woken up on the train (whether drunk or just tired) out in the wilds of Kent or Surrey somewhere with no clue where I am..

Finally, Flixster allows you to look up films, look up upcoming DVDs, where your local cinema is (either by postcode or GPS), what is one there and go to the Cinema's website (assuming it has one) to book tickets).

re: The iPhone thread

Are you concerned that you haven't spent enough on your iPhone dock, despite having spent £700 on one with a valve amplifier? Want to spend more?

Howabout buying a car where you dock the iPhone and use it to start the car and control the electrics?

You may be able to soon: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/02...zy_iphone_car/

Hmm. Would be better if you could use the iPhone's accelerometer to steer the car, lol.

Couple of changes to the above. The new version of TubeDeluxe enables you to look up the next departures from your nearest Tube/DLR station (well, most of the lines).

Also, thanks to one of the Iphone ads, I found an app called "UrbanSpoon". This lets you look up reviews for restaurants in your area (or any area in London). You can specify any combination of the area, type of food and price range. You then click Shake (or shake the phone) and it'll find a restaurant for you. If you don't specify anything, it'll pick your local area and any type of food, and any price range.

Allegedly a much bigger jump than from original iPhone to iPhone 3G...

Hmm. Oh well, if it's true, I'll "only" have a year to wait on my current contract when it comes out. Arse, LOL.

Further rumours...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03...ne_price_drop/

- O2 to allegedly slash the price in May.

- This is to clear stock in advance of the next model allegedly being launched in the summer.

-----------------------------------

And before that...

Apple will be talking about iPhone OS v3.0 on Tuesday.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10197342-37.html

So... anyone think there's any chance of cut & paste, MMS, better Bluetooth, etc.?

re: The iPhone thread

Bluetooth A2DP and MMS are my 2 most wanted features, along with landscape keyboard for texting a close third. Makes the keys bigger cos I have large fingers! I'm always spelling wrongly in portrait!

By the time the new hardware comes out I'll be just about ready for renewing my contract

re: The iPhone thread

This is very good news for me. My current contract with Vodafone is up in June, if there's a new iPhone just around the corner I may wait for that to be released before getting one.

re: The iPhone thread

Well, they have live coverage of the keynote at http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/20...s-30-event.ars

Major points so far are
  • push alerts. Applications can use Apple's servers to push alerts on to user's screens.
  • Application access to Bluetooth and Dock. No word (yet) on improved bluetooth support for users, but Apps can use it to communicate with each other.
  • Embeddable Google Maps. Applications can now use maps directly.
  • An added API for turn by turn directions. This should help the likes of Tom Tom port applications to the iPhone. Doesn't sound like turn by turn directions will be part of Google Maps though.
  • Cut, Copy and Paste. Yep, the one killer feature for most is here. Apparently the way the iPhone does it is quite intelligent as well.
  • We also now have Spotlight on the iPhone.

---------- Post added at 18:23 ---------- Previous post was at 18:21 ----------

Yes! Stereo Bluetooth is supported! No word on whether remote control support is included though.
