As sky themselves state it'll need a new tv.

With 3D telly screens becoming ever-popular, and costing around £2,000, BSkyB's system can deliver 3D pics to one of the new screens using an existing HD box and satellite dish.

If YOU read the articles correctly (like the register one for instance, which states "Early adopters will have to fork out extra for a new telly capable of displaying the stereoscopic images") you'll see they all say you need a new TV.

If YOU read the articles correctly (like the register one for instance, which states "Early adopters will have to fork out extra for a new telly capable of displaying the stereoscopic images") you'll see they all say you need a new TV.

Ther eis 4 forms of 3d technology only one requires a new tv and that aitn the one. sky themself say you need 3d glasses and if you get the tv that can do it you dnt need the glasses

have a read up on it yourself wikipedia aint great but it gives links to the informaiton required.

The 3D stuff that works with current TV is the really old style coloured glasses that is pathetic.

I think what Sky are talking about is the newer stuff like you see in cinemas. True Colour and 3D - for that you probably will need a new TV

Watch the video on the page I've just linked, they ARE using one that requires a new TV.

The version that Sky are currently running with is Polarization 3D, with passive glasses and the need for a new TV. Even the BBC say the same.

Of the four types of 3d two require a new tv, and only one doesn't require glasses.

We all know the first type, with the red and blue lenses, that doesn't need a new TV.

The other type of 3D that doesn't require a new TV requires LCD shutter glasses, which are expensive and bulky, and whilst Sky are still working with the manufacturers of them, they don't see it as a viable in home system.

The 3D that is TV only that will require a new TV and no glasses is years away from being ready.

the new stuff in cinema uses glasses too but jsut newer technoloogy

I can assure you it can be done with only new set top boxes i have been workign with teh stuff it quite cool but doesnt excite me as much as hd, there is otehr technology that aint listed there and at least one of them doesnt require anew tv it works similar to hwo the dvd that are 3d work

Sorry to say Andrew but after watching the Gadget Show on channelFive last night I will have to disagree with you. They show that you will need a new TV but not a Sky HD box.

Its a new TV not a new box. In theory the proof of concept works on the skyhd box. TBH though they will make a new Sky3D box or the like of it. This will be years away they wouldnt be stupid enough to release a this service until HD tvs are in the majority because asking people to upgrade again so soon would be a nightmare.

What can be done, and why Sky are doing are two entirely different things though.

Yes it can be done without needing a new tv, however the technology Sky are looking to deploy DOES need a new tv, and no matter how many times you say it wont it doesn't change that fact.

There's countless press releases from sky saying it'll need a new tv, videos from sky saying it'll need a new tv, and just you here saying it wont, sorry but I'm taking Sky's side on what the tech will actually need rather than yours.

3d is a long way off yet guys, no point discussing it yet as 3d tv's aren't in full production, most are just prototypes and it wont give a hollogram type effect, just means when you move your head you can see a different angle, like if you were at a football match in the crowd and someone was in your way you move your head to see around them. check engadget.com for more details about 3d tv's. I'd rather talk about those missing hd channels, they only have 3 weeks to have those extra channels up and running. Tick tock virgin!

TechRadar can reveal that Sky did not say it was planning to bring 3DTV to the UK by 2009, despite reports to the contrary.

Holy moly 3D TV, the speed VM are operating at bringing any sort of decent HD content to its platform is farcical, so regarding 3D TV I imagine the press release will be along these lines.

"There has been a lot of speculation over the arrival of 3D-TV to the VM platform, I'd first like to scotch any rumours that Sky TV are stealing a march on us concerning this exciting new product, its not true.
Admittedly Sky have managed to currently bring over thirty new 3D channels to their EPG, but don't forget VM have access to BBC's exciting two hour a night 3D channel, added to this VM will send each family a "free" pair of red and green 3D glasses. We at Virgin strongly feel that the cheapo glasses we provide adds to the overall experience of a 3D program.

Virgin have as long as it takes them to confirm the HD channels. There is a lot of work to getting the channels on to the VM TV service and there is no point in telling people anything until everything is signed and sorted!

I don't agree with your name either. Virgin are still NTL/Telewest but with a different name. Virgin didn't ruin NTL as its still the same company.
