Netgear wireless - N router
Evening all,
right i was going to use the Netgear wireless-N router so i could then use the laptop downstairs and browse/watch tv as my PC is in the spare bedroom.
Put in the install disk and then i found out it does not run on vista 64bit , to say i am peed off is putting it slighty.
Does Virginmedia supply a wireless router that is ok to work on vista 64bit at all ? as i will have this router and doggle sitting here doing nothing

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
Can it not be set up without the install disc?
It should have a web interface you can access via your browser, e.g. http://192.168.0.1/

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
I have mine running on Windows Vista 64bit.
I'm sure the drivers here work:

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
Hiya,
oh thanks for moving the thread to the right place Matt,
Rubberducky
it seems it is the driver for the usb doogle,
the problem is i cannot get the wireless router to work as the during the setup from the disk, it tells me it is not compatible for vista 64bit

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
hi carpie, are both machines 64bit as you only need to use the disc on one machine
failing that if it is a new router just baught then give netgear support a ring
alternatively if you can open the disc to view files then there is a html file that contains instructions on manual setup hope this helps ..good luck

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
Hello martyh,
the PC is the vista 64bit and the laptop is vista 32bit.
So i basically want the router plugged in to my PC and when i fancy using the laptop in a different room i can do with the doggle.
I assume that since the PC is going to have the router plugged in to it, i would need to setup all the drivers etc on the PC
thanks for your input

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
you can install the connection utility on the laptop and then get your pc to connect through it's lan port onto the network through the router
you only need the disc for one pc/laptop to set up the connection .If there is a driver issue then these can be downloaded from netgear site
as you are probably aware the restart procedure modem/router/pc is important once the utility is installed

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
ok mate i give it a try, thanks
---------- Post added at 20:34 ---------- Previous post was at 19:28 ----------
Well i have had a go trying to to install it on the laptop, but i have failed lol.
Basically i tryed to pretend that my laptop was the main computer and i connected the cables how i thought it should be done, but sadly i could not get the modem to be detected.
couple of pics how i did it, i guess it will be wrong though
I tryed the the cables at the back of the router the other way around, but no joy, when i did this the second light from the top on the router was a amber colour and not green.

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
Not really knowing the ports on the router, but looking at the colours of the ports & the colours of your cables I'd say you have it wired up wrong.
Looks like you have a white Ethernet cable coming out of the modem, which looks like it goes into one of the 4 LAN ports on the router.
And in the WAN port on the router you have a yellow Ethernet cable, but don't show where this goes. I say this is the WAN port as it's a different colour than the other 4 ports on the router.
Does this yellow cable go to your PC?
If so, then you have them round the wrong way, the Ethernet cable from the modem needs to go into the WAN port, I guess thats the bottom yellow coloured port on your router, and your PC can go in any one of the 4 other LAN ports.

Re: Netgear wireless - N router
mikeyb is correct ,the yellow supplied cable must be connected to the wan port only (usually coloured yellow)from the modem. Your pc then connects to any one of the 4 lan ports
when i connected mine up i made the mistake of leaving the modem on it is important to power off the modem first then connect the router then power on modem then power on router and laptop leave pc off at first.Once the laptop has set up the network then you should be able to connect the pc
if you are trying to set up the laptop wirelessly then don't most routers have issues with this you need to connect a ethernet cable (the white one in the photo will do)from the port in the laptop to any one of the 4 ports in the router to do the initial setup once that is done then you can connect wirelessly
