Laptop wont Come on! This is a weird one! Please help! Hi-Grade C5514

Ok i need help with this asap as it is my parents laptop that i have knackered. Basically the other day i plugged and external hard drive into its usb port. The hard drive is a basic hard drive just in an enclosure, however on the second part of the power cable (as its in two pieces, like a box which plugs into hard drive and then a kettle lead same type which use on monitors, desktops etc. This plugs into the box and plug on wall) i plugged in the wrong lead so the voltage wasnt correct. When i plugged it into the usb the screen started to flicker and get a bit staticy then the blu screen came up the dumping memory one which usually occurs when theres a hardware failure etc.

Anyways i turned the pc off then back on. It all booted up fine and everything so i again plugged the hard drive into the usb but this time with the original lead with the correct voltage. However this time it made my pc completely freeze and couldnt do anything! (move cursor, get task manager up not even turn it off on the power button!)

So i turned it off forcefully by taking out the battery and ac lead. After this i tried turning it back on but it wouldnt come on at all!!! However when i had the ac lead in and the battery the battery light comes on as if it is charging and at first so did the crescent moon as if it is in hibernation.

However the lights keep changing! so now the moon light doesnt come on and the battery light only comes on for about 30 seconds then turns off. But if i unplug the ac lead the battery light goes off but if i press th power button the moon comes on for a couple of secs then goes off?!

The laptop is a Hi Grade C5514 and i have tried taking out the battery and lead for about 8 hours and putting them back in but still no luck. I also got half way disassembling it incase it was the cmos battery and wanted to see if i could reset it or something by taking it out or replcaing it but couldnt find it anywhere!!! I need help with this asap as my parents havent yet realised its my fault and i can only feed them made up techinical nonsense for so long! (there like cavemen with technology lol) Any help with this asap will be soooooo appreciated!!! Cheers!

Still under warranty? As long as you haven't broken any warranty seals, phone them up and act dumb, just say it wont turn on anymore after shutting it down. Sounds terminal to me, id say the motherboard is fried.

Nah its not under warranty anymore its about 5/6 years ol now. How much do you reckon it would cost to get repaired if it is the motherboard which is fried? Also is it actually possible to fry the motherboard via usb? I mean i can understand if fried it whilst the wrong voltage lead was in but it crashed when i had the hard drive in with the proper lead with correct voltage...?!

Cheers

Of corse, the usb it directly connected to the motherboard. It's just a thought, im not saying it is that. To be honest you probably wont be able to get spares for it any more, coupled with the fact ive never heard of that make i doubt many spares are out there. Ebay is your best bet if you want to try and fix it, i'd just replace it myself, laptops are very cheap now for budget ones.

Stop trying to hide the fact you totalled their laptop and just tell them and if it costs you £££ and a load of grief then just pay up.

Re: Laptop wont Come on! This is a weird one! Please help! Hi-Grade C5514

if you can't get it fixed which i doubt you will to be honest try acting dumb saying that you turned it of etc and now it won't come on and basically you think it is dead.

then let them take it to a pc shop etc so then they think it has just gave up on them and then, they might replace it themselves with a newer one which then you should get away with it, sounds cruel but if they are as bad as they seem by what you say (no offence intended) then it's either lie or you replace it and dependent on what they need it to do it could be between £250-£600.

not saying that it's the best idea but worth thinking about as a last resort or something.

components die in machines all the time - I guess that laptop just... gave up... right!?!? it is, afterall 5 to 6 years old. I'd say that might be about shelf life.. time for a new one then!!! lol

I agree with you, our business replaces laptops after 3 years usage as they tend to start failing after this...

Sounds likea good time to replace it.

Take the drive out...or make sure you wipe it somehow and then stick the thing on Ebay as a spare/repair.You might not get too much but it`s something towards a new one.
