24 pin PSU

Well after i thougth my new mobo had died a death, got it replaced then the PSU made funny crackling noises...not good haha. So didn't risk it any more and repalced it with a new 500w PSU.

The thing i need to know is, the MB has a 24pin psu socket but also accepted my old 20 pin PSU with the seperate 4 socked plugged in elsewhere.

The new PSU i noticed, has 24 pin socket and the 4 pin socket... do I still need to plug the 4 pin socket in as well?

System is a AMD64 X2 4600 CPU, GForce 9500Gt PCIE Graphics, Nvidia chipset ECS 7050M Version 2 Motherboard. Motherboard caters both 20 and 24 pin PSU.

Never had to choose between PSU's connectionsbefore, and it's one area i don't want to muck about with and fry the new MOBO

Yes, the separate 4 pin plug is for a different reason entirely

much appreciated... i didn't want to plug it in and then fry something before finding out, I don't think not feeding the family this week would go down well if i needed to buy a new mobo haha

I just had the same dilemma as there was 2 X 4 pin connectors but one was marked with a number 4 on it and that was the one that went into the 24 pin connector along with the 20 pin plug. The other 4 pin went onto the mobo as usual.

they are all keyed and wont fit in the wrong holes

Unless for some reason smeagoly1's old motherboard wasn't, or he's used a bit of 'encouragement' to fit them, and that's why bits of the computer keep on zapping

Nah the old/new mobo was working fine for 4 weeks, then it just powered down,while idling, me thinking it was the mobo at fault...turned out the old psu was at fault that blew the board.. So thought it much wiser to buy a new one to fit the new 24pin mobo. Just got confuzzled over all the extra pins haha thought i'd better ask first before plugging it all in..... then pondering why the trip switch kicked in hahaha
You can guess i hate dealing with PSU's, like car breaks, i leave them to people who know, so i asked here

With ATX12v 2.0, the specification moved to the 24 pin, carrying an additional line for each major voltage.
In general the extra 4 for this purpose is often detachable to allow a 24 pin PSU to serve 20 pin requirements, and a 24 pin motherboard may work ok with a 20 pin PSU.

Nominally, the extra pins on the main power connector serve the additional requirements of PCI-E slot powered cards, while the seperate 4 pin (possibly 8 pin) ATX12V connector serves the CPU.

Even if not using high demand cards, it is best to use the full 24 pin main power, as well as the ATX12V - it is NOT either/or.

AN update, the new mobo and psu are up and running smashing. It seems to have solved a previous problem i had in a previous question here also. Same make mobo/cpu bundle from the same batch now has both of my cores in the processor running smashing! woohooo so a mega plus!
One happy PC bunny here now.
