Help networking MCE 2005 & WinXP Pro please

Hi,

This is my 2nd post on this subject, incase anyone wonders whether they've read my plea for assistance before The other topic is here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87...ng-please.html

The reason for this 2nd post is that the previous post was quite confused with lots of details. I think what I actually need is a more simplistic approach as this matter has only occured for me at least in the last 2 weeks, prior to all of this everything was working fine. However, for some reason I know experience the: "\\ZEUS\Media 02 (D) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." error and despite the number of approaches we have taken to solve the issue, it just doesn't happen.

Lastnight I managed to enlist the assistance of an able friend who spent some hours untill 0230hrs removing the networking from both MCE 2005 R2\SP3 and XP Pro SP3 and no matter what he tried it will not let me access files on the 'Media' center drives.

I can however access the drives upon the desktop system from the media system. However, for some reason it refuses access the other way around.

This sugests to the both of us that we're missing a fundamental step, in the process though a simple one. There has to be some step or something that stops xp pro from acessing the media center, but this has exhausted both my friend and I's knowledge so we need a MCE networking expert if there is such a thing?

If anyone can sugest anything that we might not know\read we would appreciate reading it.

Many thanks for your time.

Ah yes, sorry about that. I should have mentioned that both systems were upgraded to using the latest version of zone alarm (ZoneAlarm version:8.0.065.000, TrueVector version:8.0.065.000, Driver version:8.0.065.000), windows firewall has been turned off on both systems obviously. Plus the two systems pass physically through a Linksys WRT54GS router running its default firmware as it was purchased, I've not messed around with upgrading it as it's worked faultlessly since I purchased it.

My Media server and MCE box are both one in the same (Zeus), my desktop is called P182 after the case it was placed in (Antec). I've found that being 'creative' with names on these things gets me confused, so these days I just go with the first thing that comes to mind. We did start to standardise them, but found several servers named after the simpsons so we thought of 'Greak Gods' hence 'Zeus'

Just a thought that sharing is still enabled on the media drive ? You can choose the sharing tab by right clicking a hard drive on the MediaPC.

Yes it's still enabled in that manner, there's a small 'hand' holding the drive icons under 'My Computer' with the relevant settings ticked when you right click and select 'Properties'.
