No web access.

My brother asked me to look at his laptop which he runs at his home, because he tells me the indications from the router say it is connected, but no websites at all are accessed using Firefox or IE7.

I brought the laptop to my home and connected it directly to my own Virgin Media 256 modem via ethernet cable, and the modem "Ready" light is steady on with the laptop tray icon indicating connected.

I have checked the firewall, and verified all the settings in "Network Connections" are identical to my own working PC under the same conditions.

Incase this is being caused by a Virus or Trojan/ Adaware, I have installed and run, Malwarebytes, Trojan Remover, Ad-Aware Pro, Spyware Doctor, and AVG Pro, none of these found an infection causing the problem.

I am nearing the point of giving up but would hate to think after 4 days of trying to sort it that there is still maybe one thing not tried.

Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.

Regards ravel.

Re: No web access.

Can you ping any websites?

If you can, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.
Check to see if use a proxy server is ticked, if so untick it.

If you can't ping and if you have XP with Service Pack 2, try going to Start, Run, type cmd, press enter, type, netsh winsock reset, press enter and after the message, reboot the computer.

Hello, sorry can't ping due to no net access, and the proxy is not ticked.

I have carried out the winsock test and there's still no web access

Re: No web access.

What error do you get when you try to ping?
What ip address do you have?

Go into the black window and type ipconfig. This will tell you your ip address.

Re: No web access.

switch the modem and laptop with issue off, ensuring the laptop is still connected to the modem. restart the modem, wait for lights to stay at ready, then switch on the laptop.

incase you didn't know, just unplugging the ethernet cable from one machine and putting it straight into another will not give access to the internet from the new machine. you do have to restart the modem and new machine.

Re: No web access.

The error is "cant find the address, please check the name, and I have done the ipconfig and it reveals my correct IP as is also shown on my working PC.

Re: No web access.

Two computers shouldn't have the same ip address.
Is the laptop set to obtain ip address automatically?

Yes I'm aware of that, and when I normally change over from my PC to my own laptop I never need to reboot it but just reboot the cable modem, and it works every time.

My brother's laptop is set to obtain IP and DNS automatically.

Re: No web access.

So you connect the laptop to the modem, reboot the modem and the laptop gets the same ip address as your main pc?

That shouldn't happen and I've never seen it happen.
What is that first 5 digits of your ip address?

Re: No web access.

remove the network device from device manager, then rescan and let the machine readd the device.

---------- Post added at 16:31 ---------- Previous post was at 16:31 ----------

i presume you are using the correct ethernet cable type to connect directly to the modem?

The first 5 are 86.1.20 and yes there is a difference between my own PC and the troubled laptop, but every time one of you good guys comes back with an idea, I have to the change the modem output ethernet cable from one to the other , and reboot the modem so I can't to connected test at the same time.

I have now succeeded in doing a ping of the IP addy and it comes up with "32 bytes of data sent" Packets sent =4 received =4 lost =0
round trip time = Min 0ms Max 0ms

I will try your suggestion, and the cable is the same one as used for five years on my own setup, working perfectly.

Re: No web access.

Hi Bender just thought re your suggestion, I'm looking at "Network Adaptors" in Device Manager and there is no yellow exclamation marks, but reports "The device is working properly"
