Question Wireless Router recommendation?

Could someone recommend a decent wireless router to use with my 20 MB connection?

Nothing too expensive, but a good performer

Any router that is compatible with DD-WRT or Tomato is perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will these cut the mustard if I went 50 MB?

No, you need a Wireless 'N' router for 50Mb.

Wouldn't a Super G (up to 108 Mbps) be good enough?

OK - so any recommendations for a 'N' type router?

Re: Wireless Router recommendation?

If you are just using a wired connection between PC and router then most of the "g" standard routers should still be adequate for 50meg. After all the wired ports in these are 10/100 speed, and 100 is weel ahead of the 50 meg broadband service.

Wireless is a different story. Theoretically "g" is 54mbps, fractionally above the 50meg broadband. However you only get such speed if your wireless is perfect. To give margin for error, "n" routers will be more appropriate, although "n" can differ between manufacturers as it is only a draft standard. To get the full benefit you need an "n" standard card in your computer.

As with any router and networking stuff, make sure you use good quality cables, and have current firmware and drivers.

By some reason I think there is a general confusion over here. Up to 50 MBps service is up to 400Mbps speed and even if you buy the best wireless router, maximum you can get 50-60% of that speed. Virgin supplies Netgear N router with maximum, again maximum “up-to” 200Mbps – 50% from potential Ethernet connection. So, if you want to use 100% of potential speed, you will have to use, e.g., LAN connection. I am afraid I cannot suggest a 100% solution for wireless connections, the fastest wireless router I saw could support speed only up to 300Mbps.

Sorry, but that's not correct. 50Mb is just that: 50 mbps (mega bit), or 50/8 = 6.25 MBps (approximately).

Sorry, I think you miss understood me, because I haven’t mention “50 mbps”, in my first line “50 Mb” referred to 50 “MBps”, thus 50*8=400 Mbps
