Extend recordings doesn't always work

I've got the V+ box set to record 2 minutes before, and until 5 minutes after the scheduled time. Most of the time it does this fine, but annoyingly sometimes it doesn't.

I know that overlapping recordings might be a cause of the problem.

However, often that is not at play. A recent example: I wanted it to record two consecutive episodes of Ice Road Truckers on History, for example - nothing else planned to record at the time, just 0:00-1:00 and 1:00-2:00. I would have expected two of the tuners to be able to do this independently, i.e. tuner 1 23:58-1:05, and tuner 2 0:58-2:05, yet what was actually recorded was just one hour in each case.

Another example: Eastenders - both on BBC1 and BBC3, nothing else planned, and in both cases again just the scheduled time.

I have reset the box a few times already in the last few weeks, and the phenomenon persists.

Is there a trick to make sure the box always sticks to the extended times (when possible)?

Thanks!

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

It's because of the failed recordings due to overlapping that software fix now ignores overlap in cases of consequative recordings

Obviously they haven't differentiated between 2 (which it can manage) or 3 (which caused it to fail) recordings

.

Actually after saying that - I record consequative episodes of Judge Judy every week day and they always overlap by miles - i'd prefer they didn't - but only in the case of consequative recordings

P.S. Why might you want overlap of consequative recordings (watch the same bit twice)?

That is not true in my experience. Two consecutive programs will apply padding to both.

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

I read somewhere of it ignoring padding to stop failed recordings - maybe just in case of triple recordings

In that case it's not a big problem. Nevertheless I'd rather watch a programme in one go, rather than having to watch the end or the beginning on another recording (which you may already have deleted by then!). More importantly, you may not need to overlap consecutive programmes, but there's no reason why you wouldn't want to start recording the first programme earlier, and keep recording the last one until beyond the scheduled finish time.

Well I did a few tests yesterday, scheduling consecutive programmes on a BBC channel, on a Sky channel, and on two different channels, and they all padded out as expected.
So I remain baffled as to why some programmes - when there is not a hint of overlap - are not properly extended...

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

What i've found is that if you are recording a program thats an hour long (eg from 6pm to 7pm) and have two other programs set to record during the same time as the first (eg 6pm to 6.30pm and 6.30pm to 7pm) then it will remove the padding.

If the padding was left in one of the recordings would fail.

The padding is removed if the overlaps would require 3 programs to be recorded at once

as mentioned - it's probably just triple recordings when buffer is not used - because that would cause a recording to fail

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

Padding doesn't work for me at all. My V+ always starts 2 minutes early and ends 2 minutes early. I can't seem to change that no matter what I set the padding to.

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

As we were out yesterday my mum and dad recorded both X-factor & Come dancing, both of which the ending were misd and thus the result of x-factor just as they were about to anounce it.

yet the V+ box was set to over run.

Sorry, I don't understand. What recording would fail if there's only one programme set to record?

Mine did exactly the same thing with the X Factor yesterday. Its possible that its a new bug caused by the most recent software update.

Just checked and it missed off the ending to the Girls Aloud party thing too. Fairly certain it must be a problem with the software as I have it set to extend the recording 2 mins at the start and 5 minutes at the end.

Same with our new box last night. Merlin & Strictly both 'lost' their endings, even with a 5-minute buffer set.

Re: Extend recordings doesn't always work

mine too.
I have tried to extend recordings at all possible levels on both ends, but a 30 min programme will still record exactly 30 minutes.
just spoke to the help line, and they say that it needs resetting from their end...we shall see
