Regular loss of interent connection
Hi,
Ever since switching to Virgin cable a few months ago, I have had a strange problem with regularly (every day or two) losing my internet connection. I would be grateful for any assistance :-)
We have a Virgin provided netgear WGR614v6 wireless router.
We run 2 PCs: one running vista on a 'normal' internet connection, the other running XP over a corporate VPN, mostly. The VPN is stable, only the 'normal' internet drops out.
When the internet service goes, a reboot of the PC always solves the problem. Rebooting the router is not an option, as the VPN connection takes precedence :-)
When the connection is dropped:
-pinging still works OK (eg bbc.co.uk).
-the Virgin wireless manager program claims that the PC is connected to the router OK, but the router-to-internet dotted line has a "red cross".
-however it is not possible to connect to the router using a web browser - the message "unable to open 192.168.1.1 cannot locate the internet server or proxy server" is displayed when using a link from a document, although typing the router address directly into the browser address bar gives a standard 404.
I initially thought it might be a DNS problem, and have changed the DNS settings (including using openDNS) but this did not help.
I am reasonably computer-savvy, but this is baffling me - any ideas anyone?
Cheers
