Unhappy Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

Initially my Vista Home Premium PC would connect to the internet, then it went through a phase of being unable to connect after being shut down. This could be resolved for a while by using the repair/diagnose facility. Now it will not connect at all. My XP PC has no trouble connecting to the internet. I have trawled the internet, and it is obvious that this is a wide spread problem, and it seems to me that Microsoft do not give a s**t. I have tried very many of the solutions that can be found on the internet, and so far none of them have worked. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? The two PCs were accessing the net through a NETGEAR switch (model LN-112 V2) and latterly through NIKKAI ZF82D switch both 5 port 10/100Mpbs units. I have done all the usual things like re-booting the modem and manually configuring the connections. I am using a LAN cable to connect (no wireless). The cable pins out OK, and as a precautionary measure I replaced the plugs. Short of deleting Vista, and installing XP is there anything that can be done?

Re: Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

If you usually put the PC to sleep or in hibernation rather than completely shutting down, a quick reboot can resolve the problem. This is a known issue with Vista and there doesn't yet seem to be a definitive solution.

Vista does seem to have a habit of forgetting things, such as Internet connections and Explorer settings, so you sometimes have to remind it. My sister's PC forgot last week it had a printer, and it wasn't until I logged into the Administrator account (intending to reinstall it if necessary) that the damn thing suddenly thought 'Oh, there it is! Better reinstall it quick!' and it did. There's no love lost between those two, I tell you...

There might be something here that'll help with your connectivity issue.

Re: Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

In my case I don't think that Vista has forgotten anything, it has totally lost the plot. If Microsoft spent as much time on software development as it does on devising yet more ways of protecting its so called intellectual rights then just maybe Vista might be deemed to be fit for purpose. As Windows becomes increasingly bloated taking up more and more hard drive capacity and demanding ever more ram in order to run a host of useless features with each new version the operating system component becomes less proficient at performing the task of running applications efficiently or properly. And certainly in the case of Vista it is the customer that is fulfilling the role of exposing the inherent lack of ability of the product to do the job that it is supposed to do. Microsoft are very fond of blaming hardware or trying to pass the buck to the computer manufacturer. Surely if you are selling an operating system then it should even be able to run a wind gramophone if necessary? There should be no ifs or buts, no exceptions, it should work straight out of the box. Anyway rant over, but I am still stuck with a computer that cannot access the internet due an operating system that does not function properly.

Re: Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

i'm running 3 vista pc's and 2 vista laptops through my network and i've never had a problem with them disconnecting, dropping or forgeting connections.
have you got the latest updates on your system?
also you say you are running via a netgear router i had one of those and had nothing but problems with it (simular to the one's your having) but that was with xp.

also on another thought have you loaded any other firewall software or antivirus that might be conflicting with the vista software as vista already has windows defender pre-loaded it might have conflicts.

hope some of this helps a bit

Re: Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

both my laptops are running vista and i have never had a problem. Can you access the local network (ie ping another PC?) does it get an IP address from DHCP? (open cmd prompt [start > run > type cmd and press enter] then type in ipconfig /all) then look for the IP Address line and see if its got an address starting with 192.168.x.x If so it could be that the routers blocking it for some reason? You dont have MAC Address restricted access to your router do you?

Re: Vista limited connectivity unidentified network

My Vista connection started doing this a while back, did it for about a week and stopped again all of a sudden. All very weird. No new software or hardware to make it such!
When it did bork out, I would just disable and enable to adapter and it would pick up again automatically. Everything seems to be ok now - fingers crossed.

Sorry this isn't much help to you...

Maybe delete your network adapter, reboot and let Vista install it again to see if that helps?
