Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
A colleague of mine has a NTL broadband connection with a ambit 100 Cable modem, shown here:
she has two PC's one of which is connected via USB to the Cable Modem. She wants to connect both PC's up the the internet, so I went out and bought a Belkin F5D7230 wireless router. followed the instructions to the letter connected the Cable modem to the WAN/Internet port on the Router, connected one PC via ethernet left the other with USB, I setup the routers config with the USB MAC address of the ethernet connected comp, I then powered everything down in order CM,Router, PC's then powered backup the opposite way. It gets the 192 IP from the wireless router but it wont connect to the internet, I have tried plugging the CM into the PC ports, still nothing, iv tied cloning the ethernet address and still nothing, iv tried ringing NTL and got an indian guy that couldnt help and told me to ring belkin, then belkin told me to ring NTL.
I`m VERY frustrated with it, and iv done everything I can think of, anyone got any ideas? I`m starting to think maybe the cable modem isnt capable of being connected wirelessly.
Its my first post here so please be gentle
Thanks in advance
Craig

Re: Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
if you're using a router, all the pcs should be connected to that - you can't have one pc connected to the modem and one to the router.
The modem will either run the usb port or the ethernet port, it can't do both at the same time.
connect only the router to the modem, using the ethernet cable, connect the pcs to the router, reboot it all and see what happens

Re: Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
You have strictly followed this procedure:
Power off everything, PC, router, modem.
unplug USB and ethernet cables from modem
connect only ethernet between router WAN and modem
connect PC(s) only to router LAN (ethernet or wireless)
Power on modem (let settle)
Power on router (let settle)
Power on PC(s)
It's easiest to get the wired connections running over a router first, then add in the wireless. The reboot of modem is critical whenever you swap devices directly connecte to it and as stated above, you cannot connect using ethernet and USB to the modem at the same time. Since Virgin Media don't "support" routers, they won't help you with the configuration. If you really doubt the modem ethernet port is working correctly, connect a PC direct by ethernet to it (no USB) and reboot all. If that fails then call faults (don't mention the router, just that you can't connect by ethernet to the modem).

Re: Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
Just my all that has been advised after you have confirmed a connection via network cable, as advised not USB you can then move forward with your router which is dead easy to install. I would say use the install CD that comes with the Belkin router for an easy install and no heartache of the install.
Go for the open connection to start and work forward with the instructions. If you have any problem phone Belkin who will help you set the router up. In the event they tell you to phone VM inform them you have confirmed you do have a working connection from the modem.
As far as I’m aware you are not able to use both USB and RJ45 connection at the same time as the modem is unable to issue two IP address ?????
Lastly if all else fails read the instructions which are easy to follow. Hope you get it sorted

Re: Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
I too am an owner of an Ntl home 100. I bought a belkin wireless G router to connect my PS3 to the internet. I did suffer the exact same problem as yourself and am currently suffering a very slow connection.
I was connected to my modem by USB which didn't help a great deal when trying to install the thing as this belkin router only operates by ethernet. After a couple of frustrating days and some swatting up on the troubleshooting page and this fourm (as I am no tech expert) I took some advice as Rob has put it;
Power off everything, PC, router, modem.
unplug USB and ethernet cables from modem
connect only ethernet between router WAN and modem
connect PC(s) only to router LAN (ethernet or wireless)
Power on modem (let settle)
Power on router (let settle)
Power on PC(s)
It required a lot of faffing around but eventually worked and worked extremely fast... for about 5 days. Now I have been experiencing extremely slow internet connectivity over the weekend to the point the PS3 is unplayable and my Pc's browser is running like a 56k modem. So i'm back using USB with no router.
I repeated the powering off procedure and its still slow. I then connected the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer directly and its still slow. So I am guessing this is either a problem with the ethernet cable which is not an Ntl one (Aquired off an engineer in work last week, quite old last tested 2000 lol) or it is a problem with the modem.
I'm ordering a new ethernet cable tonight and if this doesn't improve things i'm going to ring virign and blag a free modem upgrade... cause its pretty old.
Hope this was some help, I know it probably wasn't, but at least you know there's at least one person out there in the exact same boat. Goodluck. Keep me updated

Re: Making NTL:Home wireless using Belkin Kit
Cheers. The playstation is connected wirelessly through the router. I went to maplins and bought a new ethernet cable so hopefully this will do the trick. I'm about to try it out now. The PS3 has a built in wireless card. Another plus side of the PS3 compared with the increasingly familiar (not inculded) Xbox 360.
