Update received in South Yorkshire, so far so good, getting 1.2mb/s download speeds.

Well done VM.

I was under the impression that the 4 to 10Mb upgrades were complete.

I take it that you have done the standard check of rebooting your modem? You may wish to check what your modem configuration is by going to 192.168.100.1 (pass words root/root) and seeing what your Maximum Downstream Data Rate is in the Operation Config. section. 10240000 =10Mb.

Other than that post the details of your modem and check with the VM techs here that your modem can handle 10Mb as some can't.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Even the sb3100 can handle 7Mbs although it is the slowest day round here tonight since the upgrade. There's also the issue of whether your wireless connection will do 10Mbs.

They acheved the deadlines by changing their method. Previously they have done the capacity upgrades first and then done the 10mb upgrade. Tis time, probably to ensure that the deadline was achieved they did it about face and the capacity upgrade are schedules for the next week or so ( see maintenance schedules at VM ) in the meantime those people oin those areas will at times suffer significatnly less than 10mb speeds

But

a)probaby still better than the 4mb

b)probably wont tell the difference between that and a STM

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I am currently receiving my BB via a Samsung STB. Consequently, I cannot make use of the 10MB upgrade. I called customer services tonight and they have arranged for a self install SACM to be sent out to me. I should have it by Wednesday, only trouble is that if UPS don't leave it in the porch it might end up being returned to sender. I am out at work all day. Cross that bridge if/when I get to it.

Anyway, is it easy to fit? What is involved? I assume that the coax is split between the STB and wall box. My Ethernet cable then is transferred from the STB to the SACM. Some form of download must take place to initiate the change over, how's that for a guess?

Is there anything I should be aware of before I make any connections?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

UPS will leave a card for you arrange another time for delivery.

The kit comes with everything you need with instructions and you need to call Quickstart to register your modem on 0800 953 9500.

Also make sure you make a note of the MAC address on the cable modem before you call them, it saves scrabbling on the floor trying to find it with the operator on the phone

WDINAT - if I finally give in & arrange for an SACM to be sent, will they send me one that's only suitable for my speed or one that will do 10/20MB?

You will get in all probability an Ambit 256 which is 20mb capable if you ever feel the urge.

All modems issued are 20mb capable.
