Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
Got a new Dynamode BR 6004 w-G1 wireless AP router today, and after hours of struggling to connect it, im giving up and need some help!
basically, the virgin ethernet works fine (im on it now) then i introduced the new wireless router into the loop..
followed all installation instructions and everything works perfectly, all lights on green that are meant to be etc.
Now, time to set up the wireless network. i have to enter 192.168.1.1 into internet explorer address bar. This fails. The computer is getting the connection but it is not connecting to the internet through the network, when i turn the computer on with it plugged into the wireless modem to set it up, the LAN logo in the taskbar just says unidentified network local only. (it usually says local and internet with a picture of a home)
i've followed ALL procedures and i just cant get it to connect to the internet!
Is is because i'm on Vista?
Any ideas guys?
Thanks,
James

Re: Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
 to Cable Forum
A couple of basics:
When you first connect your new router to the modem, you are powering the modem off - it cant "see" the router otherwise, and you've obviously disconnected you PC from the modem.
Can you first get a wired connection between your PC <> router <> modem <> internet working, before you then try to add in the wireless?

Re: Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
Hi rob,
basically, i've got a laptop <> virgin media modem <> internet, which is working fine.
when its plugged into the laptop it comes up as a home network and connects to the internet absolutely fine.
now, i powered everything off and unplugged the lot, connected it like:
Laptop <> Wireless Router <> VM Modem <> Internet.
I then powered everything up in the correct order but it comes up on the computer as an unidentified network, and just stays local only. i'm sure ive tried everything..
havent even got as far as trying it wirelessly, i cant get onto the router set-up page to set up the wireless network
am i doing something wrong?

Re: Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
Right that's a problem between router and computer they aren't communicating. Nothing (yet) to do with the modem.
1) try a different ethernet cable between the two.
2) Check your network card's settings (network connections). Is stuff set to auto for the TCP/IP (good), or is there a fixed IP (you don't want that).
3) Have you got any firewalls or similar running on the computer? Occasionally they can interfere.

disabled all firewalls, replaced ethernet cables, set the network as 'Private' rather than public and still no joy..
the network map on vista network goes:
LAPTOP <> Unidentified Network -X- Internet
anything else i could do?

Re: Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
Ignore the wireless side of things for now - if you can't see browse to the router's config screens when wired there is no hope for wireless. The inability to browse to the router config shows it has to be a router <> computer issue.
If you have played around with the router settings at all (difficult if you can't browse to it), do a factory reset - many router have a little button on the rear somewhere.
flush the current IP from your computer's ethernet card - command prompt ipconfig /release, then reboot the computer, having reconnected it to the router.
If you still have a problem please use the command prompt and tell us the results of "ipconfig /all", when the computer is connected to the router.

I must admit to being stumped.
You could try disabling the wireless adapter on your computer. You could also try uninstalling and then reinstalling your wired adaptor's drivers. Otherwise I'd be contacting Dynamode technical support and accusing them of selling you a router that doesn't work.
I assume you have tried any troubleshooting or connectivity software that they provided?

Goto network and sharing center, choose customize, and set it to private.
About "this action needs elevation", could be a UAC problem, do you have UAC enabled?

169.* address means you're not getting a valid IP from a DHCP server.
First thing I'd test is the local TCP/IP setup. Open a cmd window and do 'ping 127.0.0.1' (without the quotes). See if that passes packets ok.

Take the tick out of Internet Protocol Version 6 ( TCP/IPv6) it sometimes works on Vista.

Re: Distressed - cant connect to internet with new wireless router .. Help!
Hi, try rebooting your cable modem 1st let it boot up completly so that has an ip address assigned by VM's DHCP server then power on your wireless router with auto config switched on this should sort it as you have effectivly got 2 routers trying 2 comunicate with dhcp server at same time as your wireless router is dhcp enabled looking at your pic and as for that ip address you gave in 1st post its an automaticly assigned address when something cant comunicate with dhcp server. Hope this helps.

In other words 192.168.1.1 ip address means dhcp is enabled in ip settings but no dhcp server was detected so windows will automaticly assign this ip address. Hope that makes more sense lol
