Laptop OS Backup Problem

Hi all

I just purchased a new Fujitsi Siemens Amilo LI-2735 Laptop, but it always fails on making a recovery DVD.

Once you boot up you get a constant nag screen, warning you to make a recovery dvd, and won't go away unless one is made.

Problem is, going through eveything the laptop states in it's recovery console menu, it always fails burning the recovery dvds. -R disks always fail on 7% to go and come up with "write error" it refuses to accept RW DVD's.
The burner does work as i have tested it burning several files. The dvd's are branded and never had a problem, even tested this batch on my pc no problems. Several coasters later on the laptop.

I don't want to continue on adding things to the laptop until the recovery dvds are made. Buying them costs and extra 36 Euros and doesn't get rid of the nag screen.

Any suggestions or known problems with new laptops and making recovery dvd's?

At a bit of a loss at the moment.

Smee

Do you know anyone with an external writer that you could try?

Unfortunatley not
I'm just hoping it's some simple problem i am overlooking, and not a problem with the new lappy.

what is confusing as i look over it, the nag message also said you can back up to HD, but recomends making a dvd, but the recovery console just does not give me the option.

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

You could try some other backup software such as Ghost, etc...

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

I'd see about removing the back-up software or at least asking on the relevant software forums on how to disable the warning.

Which DVD media are you using??? just that cheap ones used to fail for me when writing a DVD but not when backing up data, where a decent brand (i.e. Sony) would work perfect in any circumstance

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

Hi Kymmy.

The recovery console for making the recovery disks is accessed by pressing F8 or F9 when booting up.
It gives you the standard "load windows normal, safemode, debug mode or last known good config" but has the added "recovery console"

I am using Memorex and Kodak dvd media at the moment.

I will search to see if there are any relevent forums for fujitsu lappys though.

Looks like several peeps have similar probs with this model lappy from fujitsu. I see several or still waiting for a reply from the lappys official forum.

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

Does the drive say -R on the drive? Most laptops tend to come with +R drives nowadays.

have you tried using the software from within windows if you have then i would press the f8 button, and aslong as you have nothing on there already that you can't loose do a restore on it then if it still doesnt do it contact, fuji as that is the first thing they will tell you to do had many run ins with stuff like this when i was working for comet, other than that you could try something like norton ghost or even try burning something to disk other than, a back up disc just to rule out the drive and also try another brand of disc i use phillip and people say not, cheap disc's but i used titanium i i think they were called for along time with no problems.

The laptop in the OP comes with a multi format drive.
The only time I've seen new'ish laptop that came with one and it wasn't, it was a Dell :/

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

Ok, well the only other things to try are slowing down the burning speed (works a lot for me) and trying a better quality disc, as already suggested.

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

iirc the warning will be removable by just a vistit to msconfig

Also you would most likely be able to recover the laptop without the recovery disc made from the console. Check the options see if it will allow recovery fromt here

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

Hi all, got it sorted eventually. Many thanks

The specs given for the drive in the manual and the box are all wrong. It seem like it will only back up to a top quality +R disk.
Looked like quite a large number of buyers got caught out and asking the same questions, on various forums.

Goes to show you that some drives will only accept top quality disks.

It should be no problem for the company to actually provide a recover disk for the lappy, as a 36.50Euro charge ontop of buying the machine is a bit steep. I am sure in the past some ready built PC's came with a full recovery disk.

Re: Laptop OS Backup Problem

Your lucky, my laptop didn't come with a CD/DVD or even a way to create one. Not a big deal as i chucked Vista out the window anyway I just have no way of going back if i want to.
