Most common damage i've seen is where the plastic center bit gets broken off leaving the pins hanging, and if the End user doesn't notice it's then possible that when plugging the next item in you bend the pins causing them to touch and short out, ESP if you accidently tried to plug it in back to front, without that centre bit in place you could probably force it in.

Mind you seen a few USB sockets missing that center bit, not seen one shorted one out yet.

I just found the plastic center bit of the USB socket so I presume when it was rippted out it broke it and shorted. I have also manage to damage the other USB socket next to it as I can not get a USB plug in it.

So I think I will disconnect the motherboard cable for the front USB and get a USB hub

If your lucky and it's a fairly standard case you may be able to get a couple new ports for it try somewhere like ebay perhaps.
