Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

I would say it is related.
try looking at www.myspace.com

I bet you get a time-out, or a browser connection failure like this:

Quote:
The document contains no data.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

I am in Liverpool and can use all of these sites, having set my proxy to the address mentioned earlier in this thread.
If you are not sure how to do it I have left a brief guideline in the thread.

As for studying IT in Uni and not knowing the difference between a proxy and a web address ?

The course has gone downhill since I did it !

IT courses tend to = programming, systems analysis, etc, as I remember.

Things as practical as what a proxy is just don't come into it.

Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

If you call any ISP 1st line they will always try to eliminate any problems on your pc.

Recent Windows updates and security program updates have left numerous people unable to access websites or just certain sites.

So don't be to hard on them.

I would sugguest you reset your tcp/ip and winsock catalog and flush your dns resolver cache after rebooting your modem (of course). Also try disabling your security software.
And then in internet options delete all your files and reset the settings in advanced.

You might as well try it before they ask you to do it !

It does work most of the time unless there is an issue with the Isp but they don't know that as outages do not always hit every cust in the same area, it can be very random.

Have I mistaken that knowledge from my GSCE or A Level then ?

Working as 2nd line Tech for a competitor, I hear this everyday.

'I am a computer tech, so i know the problems not at my end' etc........

Strangely enough 9 out of 10 times the problem is at their end !

Recent updates on vista have been a killer !

Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

I have had the same problems in the Merseyside area for the last 2 days and had all but replaced the hard drive. It's a relief to think it could be Virgin.

I used the proxy mentioned above and it has helped but I still can't update AVG and there is still at least one website I can't access, I get a forbidden message saying I can't access /forums/ on this server.

Any idea when the problem will be resolved?

phew, at last it shows up

I haven't been able to get on the newsgroups and raise it, so I'm glad to see it at least shows as a fault now.

Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

it's fixed for me now.
I can browse without a proxy and can contact news.virginmedia

they haven't updated the status page yet though, and probably won't until they are sure it is fixed

Re: Can't Get on Some Sites*

Its still not good enough, that when you call into see if there is anything wrong in the area, even after they have had lots of reports, pointing to that very fact. They still do not update the automatic message or the website to indicate there might be a problem.

48 hours after the problem starts, Virgin update the customers, this is my only experience of virgin.

It screams of a "backs against the wall and hope for the best” approach. It’s like they know it’s a problem, but if they keep hush about it, no one might notice until they get it sorted.
