Disk space not showing

Can someone help me with a problem with a friends PC before i throw it out his window lol.

For a few weeks now hes been having problems that when he deletes files, the file space doesnt show up, for example, he had 90.2GB free and i deleted 4.1Gb more holding down shift which deletes them for good and the 4.1GB hasnt shown up, still says he has 90.2GB.

I thought it was a disk fault so i put a new 250GB in its place and its doing exactly the same and i think its software, any ideas what i can run to look into this problem?

Thanks.

Could be explorer failing to refresh . I take it you have run disk cleanup and cleaned unneeded system restore points (presuming its windows) Also if its windows check diskmanagement (right click my comp select manage then disk management) see if the figures differ

Re: Disk space not showing

start > run > type 'sfc /scannow' without quotation marks

second to that, you're not looking in the 'total size' column instead of the 'free space' column, are you?

Re: Disk space not showing

another thing that I find is easier for future use / access to windows setup files is to copy the 'i386' folder (not just the contents, but the actual folder) to your C: drive, then in regedit, navigate to;

HKLM > software > microsoft > windows > CurrentVersion > setup

and change 'SourcePath' to 'C:\' without quotations.

this means that any time windows need to view the windows disc for files, it will look at the i386 folder on your C:\ This means no more getting the disc out, plus it's a lot faster.

Also he may have some sort of recycle bin protection installed. Norton Utilties used to do this by default (basically *everything* deleted by the system went to the recycle bin regardless of how it was deleted). Don't know if Systemworks (which includes Norton Utilties) does.
