Very poor speed problem

Im currently on the 20meg service with virgin media.

However the fastest download speed i have ever managed to achive is around 690kb/sec, this is around 6meg.

I have tested at different times and sources, so this is not because of any capping, fair usage or poor speed from the download source.

I was on the old 10meg service prior to this and still only managed the same download speed.

When i had the upgrade to 20meg i also got a modem from virgin to ensure it would cope with the new speed.

Anyone have any ideas?

I dont see why i should pay virgin via a premium number for a problem that is clearing at there end.

Any replies will be appreciated thanks

Faults is free on 151 from a VM landline or local-rate 0845 454 1111 from any other - note not premium rate.

We need more information about your setup; do you have a router, what OS, what happens when you connect your PC directly to the modem, have you tried the optimisations (http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb...timisation.php).

Further to that I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge will be able to analyse your signal levels.

Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.

What I want you to post is the Downstream and the Upstream plus what model the modem is for me thanks.

DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running> times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB

The above looks normal the is nothing at fault in the above post, it is within the normal operational parameters of your modem.

The is probably a fault on the uBR you are on, or the is an over utilization issue on it.

Check this link to see if your area has been upgraded from 4MB to 10mb and consider downgrading to size L, I do not know what package you are on but it is possible that it may be a better prospect for you considering the issues above plus a saving.

Your set up looks fine, its probally just the same problem as many of us are experiencing - too many users on your UBR. (virgin medias fault).

I too am experiencing almost the exact same problem as you, VM have now acknowledged the problem and are giving me £37 off my bill for this moth & £18 of nexts - until they set a date to fix the UBR.

If it is a problem with your UBR you should get the saveings/discounts too.
