[FIXED] Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

World of Warcraft keeps crashing out and I removed all of the addons to make sure it wasn't one of them causing it, after that I checked the temperature on crashing with Speedfan and it was alarmingly high (74 degrees C for the CPU) so I ran Prime95 to prove that it was temperatures causing the problems and I got this:

OK the CPU temperature is high, but what is getting up to 90!? - The North Bridge? (NB Heatsink feels rather warm to the touch)

Cheers

Graham

Re: Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

What processor is this? Speedfan is not always accurate...

The NB should be fine as long as it's not scorching hot.

Re: Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

looks way to hot for me. Does it pass the OYB test? Check the temps on bios and try Everest.

Re: Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

i would take a guess and say the 90c is the northbridge and that the 65c is the southbridge, and i would check the bios for the temps and use everest as zingle has suggested i don't use anything else and it works fine for me.

what motherboard and chip have you got if it is a motherboard with a nvidia chipset then i would be 100% sure, about the guess above as they do run hot but not that hot intel chipsets run allot cooler also have you overclocked the cpu?

i would also check that fans are running and free from crud also if possible try to reapply the heat compound like artic silver that might help.

After a bit of investigation, these values seem to be right

If they are they your northbridge is way way way to hot

The OYB test is you run it for a while touch the heatsink and if you shout out Ouch You B...... then you know its to hot my patented method lol

LOL, that reminds me of the little voltage regulator [or whatever it was] heatsink on my my old Voodoo3. Managed a few unintentional OYB tests on that.

I thought it was the NB that was getting too toasty, not the CPU?

Re: Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

The CPU was making things crash at 75-80 degrees, I've just cleaned up the CPU and Heatsink and applied new Thermal paste and run Prime95

Old Idle CPU: 45oC
Old CPU Temp: 74oC
Old NBridge Temp: 90oC

New Idle CPU: 29oC
New CPU Temp: 50oC
New NBridge Temp: 65oC

much happier, let's see how it behaves in real terms

---------- Post added at 16:18 ---------- Previous post was at 15:47 ----------

It seems to be sorted

Very warm CPU seemed to be warming up the ambient temperature in the case (as I thought) now I've sorted the CPU everything else is much cooler!

Re: [FIXED] Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

just shows what new thermal paste can do simplest of things but might have just been needed if the pc is old'ish

Re: Uh Oh. (Temperature Problems)

Yeah, those temps are a lot better. Did you redo the paste on the NB heatsink? Some manufacturers don't do a very good job of putting it on. Also, the NB coolers some manufacturers supply are really crap, though they do seem to be getting a bit better these days.
