Jo, had my upgrade a couple of weeks now, and no problems.

Thanks for that reassuringly news foreverwar, there's hope yet.
I'm not usually a pessimistic person but, having had a stable connection (for the last couple of months) for the first time in over a year, I can't help but feel there will be a great gnashing of teeth before I get a stable 10MB. Oh well, off to reboot the modem...again.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
My dad actually just phoned Virgin enquiring about the upgrade and they told him that the set top cable box we have now can only handle 4mb. So they are coming to fit a modem for the upgrade on the 12th of august. So will just have to wait till then.

As we still seem to get quite a few new and non-members looking in on this thread maybe it would be as well to remind everyone still using their set top box connection to access their broadband connection that they will need to phone VM customer services to get a stand alone modem as none of their set top boxes can deal with speeds over 4MB.

And not to use a USB cable to connect it.

Will the 'NTL Home 200' style modem handle 10MB upgrade OK? I've had it a good few years you see.
Thanks.

It still states that Reading is TBC.
I would suspect all remaining areas are wrapped up by the end of August.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
As a couple of people have mentioned dont use a USB cable to connect your modem to your pc. I live in stockport and got the upgrade about 5 days ago. Ive had broadband off ntl/virgin for around 3 years and until 5 days ago always used a USB cable. Turns out USB only handles upto around 5MB. So obviously had to change to an Ethernet cable. Speed then shot upto 9MB+.
Only thing is the speed is usually around what i pay for. but at night it sometimes goes really slow, and im talking less than 1MB sometiems. I dont download any illegal stuff, i use Youtube quite a lot and sometimes trade mp3's with friends on messenger, and normal internet surfing. so can anyone explain why the speeds sometimes go really low at night?

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer
Hi.
I live in Didsbury, Manchester. I noticed the schedule for upgrade changed to show Manchester as upgraded in the past couple of days, so I rebooted my modem a few times but I'm still getting 4mb.
modem info:
(new type black modem)
cpc1-with4-0-0-custXXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled
Didsbury is South Manchester, I presumed that it would be included with the Manchester/Stockport upgrades. Is this the case or..?
Thanks very much for any info at all

Hi antmam64 to the forum.
Your connection details show that you are on the Baguley server cpc1-with4-0-0-custXXX.bagu.cable.ntl.com which still has areas still waiting to be upgraded. With any luck we should be upgraded in the near future.
I would advise you to edit your post to remove your customer number.
