I'm not sure if im posting in right area sorry if i am not. I'v recently got the free upgrade from Virgin Media so i now get 10mb instead of 4mb but for sum reason my brother downstairs can get bout 600kb's download speed but he cabled wid the router im wireles but i only get 300kb's and i was getting that speed before the update from Virgin Media so why would i not get the speeds or at leased close to what me brother is getting? Iv got a 3Com Product #: 3CRWE51196.

Re: Router Problem?

Hi. Welcome to the forums.
Were you on a wired or wireless setup before? There is always some speed loss with wireless although it can be reduced sometimes by changing channel or device locations.

Re: Router Problem?

Hi Fully Loaded,

Please note it says UP TO 10mb. You know what they are like, will charge you for a service UPTO but never deliver it. Also. Try changing the wireless channels on the router as you may have other wireless routers in the area that are interfering with your own connection.

Re: Router Problem?

I understand that it will be upto 10MB but when I had the 4MB package i was gettin 300kbp's and still getting 300kbp's with the 10MB service but my brother's computer has improved speed from 350kbp's to 600kbp's also tried changing channels to no affect. Thank you any way Neil.

Re: Router Problem?

According to the user manual, the wireless transmission of your router has a top speed of:

Quote:

Transmission rate: 11Mbps, automatic fallback to 5.5, 2 or 1Mbps
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/too...user_guide.pdf

The bottleneck might be the wireless device on your computer. Do you know the make and model number?

Re: Router Problem?

Hi Fully Loaded,

You may have tried this but have you tried updating the drivers on your your machine ? This can solve a lot of problems but also try updating the firmware of the router if an update is available. I noticed that this router (us version) appears to be discontinued. Have u tried setting your wireless pc as the dmz computer and killing the firewall on the router to check to see if their is any noticeable increase in speed ? Also try moving the router as close to the wireless computer as possible.

Re: Router Problem?

Linksys WMP54G is my network adapter. Iv looked threw my router options and it seems it only has WEP security so i cannot set it to DMZ and the router is as close as im gonna get it unfortunately. To my knowledge im all upto date with drivers and firmware. Tried disabling the routers firewall it did seem to improve speed but only by 10kbp's at most. Thanks all for any help.

DMZ has nothing to do with encyrption. It simply allows all ports to point to your computer. Do NOT do this, it leaves you open to attack unless you know what you are doing.

If you're on 11Mbps wireless you're likely not going to get it. I'm on 54Mbps wireless and I get about 25Mbps at most, literally half. 300KB/s is about 1/3 of the speed so I'm guessing its just a limitation in the hardware. Since your wireless card is 54Mbps compatible just buy a new router with 54Mbps or higher wireless speeds and that should help. I recommend the Linksys WRT54G.
