Well it seems to tell it like it is on my bit of Cable as I get

switch from Google to virgin home page = 56 sec!
switch from virgin home page to virgin mail = 43 sec
switch from virgin mail to Cable forum = 106 sec
Download 1Meg file from bbc engineering = 53 sec
download 10Meg file from bbc engineering =718 sec with errors
download latest Microsoft package 6 attempts errors

and test my net says "Ouch, are you on dial-up or something? Your connection scored 0.5/5 stars..
Your connection is: 103 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps
You downloaded at: 13 kB/s
You are running: 2 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 78.77 second(s)
Member Ident:Username:wirecutter CompID:75308557191
Test Time:: 2008/07/12 - 5:02am
Test Browser and OS info: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.15) Gecko/20080623 Firefox/2.0.0.15
Test ID: C3WN9TUI7 (if this is a screenshot go to testmy.net to see if this is fake)
Diagnosis ^info^: May need help : running at only 3.44 % of your hosts average (ntl.com)
This was tested from a 97 kB file and took 7.734 seconds to complete

and this is from a ALL SINGING UPGRADE 10 MEG

If I use the standard Virgin speedtest below I get on average 2.6Mbps and you times that by 8 giving over 20Mb your test site gives me under 10Mb even http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ gives better speeds and Gamefiles is from a dedicated Virgin server.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files and run them wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running> times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Some days (6 in 85) the net is running at 21meg on that checker but most of the time its slug mail I have tried using the Y-B-Y and the larger files "Timed Out" the same goes for the two game files down load. Its not only the slowness of the net its the high error rate using the engineering site to down load a 10meg zoneplate image the number of errors make it unusable, the same is true if I thy to have net radio or video, this time last year all this was possible.
Just tested on www.speedtest.bbmax and got the following:
Download Speed 339 kbps (42.4 KB/sec)
Upload Speed 350 kbps (43.8 KB/sec)
Link to result: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/res...3868&v=4644289
this is not 10meg any more or even the 1meg of five years ago

I've merged your post with the main thread talking about this.

The schedule is here.

Liverpool is still TBC...

The difference between our speeds must be regional as I very rarely get exceptionally slow speeds on my connection.

Would that be a Roadrunner or a Dodo?.....Sorry couldn't resist.

I'm starting to feel left out in the uprating discussions.

According to the "Where's my upgrade?" page the Reading area is still "TBC". Has any one heard any thing about the RG12 area and when it will be upgrded?

What area of Stockport are you in? Because our modem (we're SK5) just rebooted itself and it's still on 4mb... not that I'm upset about it, it's beginning to feel like we'll be the last part of town to be upgraded anyway (was last time....)

*drums fingers on desk waiting....*

Ah well... time for bed soon anyway.. will leave everything switched off until morning

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

hey hey, im in the baguley area (wallasey) and my net got the upgrade yesterday, even tho the site still says tbc, anyway, i did a speed test on thinkbroadband.com and i got 9.8 down and 0.5 up which isnt bad, i did a test download at microsoft.com and after connecting at around 3Mbps it settled down and i was getting a steady 1.2Mbps

so finally it looks like the baguley people are getting what they want!!!
