No one should attempt either until the problems are solved. It's seems the activation system is down and it handles the new iPhones and the old ones updating to new software.

Yep another great plan by the headless chickens (managers) at O2. You would think they have a contingency for this, but alas as per... they don't!
Clueless doesn't even come into it.
@Damien, mine just isn't activated at all.

Re: iPhone Tips (was UK Release info)
The problem will have been made worse due to the Americans getting up and buying iphones as well and trying to activate them. I would have thought that apple and the mobile companies could have made an app available to use in store to activate the phones locally without having to get onto the interweb to aples clogged servers.

IMO all this just exposes Apple's vast inexperience yet again when it comes to the mobile market.
Thread title amended to a more appropriate one...

This is not O2 it's Apple.
They have released a new phone that needs activating on ITMS, not only that they have released it in 22 countries, not the 7 of the Mk1 handset.
They have released the motherload 2.0 firmware for the old phone that is pounding their servers as 6m people download it and to rub salt in that wound it then requires activation on ITMS so that is two groups of people hitting the activation servers
They have released all these widgits to pound the servers as well.

To be fair this is Launch day with all of the sold stock trying to activate it self at the same time. I'm sure Microsoft would have problems if when Vista launched many 100,000's of thousands of people tried to activate online.
My 1st gen iphone took 30 mins to activate on launch night when there was no where near as many getting activated. Certainly not 22 countries worth. Perhaps they should have staggered the launch to a country or so per day.

I don't think it's inexperence, I think it's just idiocy. You don't need to be experenced to understand if it you are releasing a product world-wide, and software for all existing owners of the product online, all of which require activation that you should ensure your systems can handle it
The phone itself has shown a lot of improvement they have made (app store, 3g, and so on) and allowing the price to come down. Which is shown by the massive demand for the iPhone. It's just this stupid activation
It's also unclear what is going on with O2. There seem to be having software troubles as do AT&T...

Launch day or not they have still brought out a phone with an extremely outdated camera - 2mp?? I remember getting a phone in 2006 with 2mp. Pictures are apparently easy to take - partly because it totally lacks any useful features such as a flash, macro, autofocus, etc that all of Apple's competitors include as standard.
OK it's more aimed at music and browsing usage but they have the cheek to call it a smartphone? Hang on, wasn't the 1st gen iPhone meant to be a smartphone too, with its 2G-only network?
I'm an unapologetic Nokia fan-boy and whereas the touch-screen feature is a good novelty, it'll take a few more attempts at a decent all-round phone from Apple to move me away from my 8gb N95.

Think it's kind of unfair, the camera is it's worst point but the browsing, email, touch-screen, music and now applications are all very good and IMO better than what is on other phones.

Not unfair when a good camera is what some people look for in a phone! It's a dying artform but video-calling....not available on the iphone either. For a phone which could have been so much better....it has not impressed me from what I've seen so far. Apple have made no attempt to hide they favour the US market when it comes to features, Nokia is more global. They get my vote.

Depends what you look for I guess but lacking one or two features you want only makes the phone a bad phone for you and not a bad phone for all as the demand is showing. Like I said, it is a lot better than the Nokia phones for a lot of features. I think they got all of it right now expect for the camera (and obviously this update thing).
The applications are very good and so is the touch screen. The iPod mode is the best music player on a phone as is the browser (helped by the screen). I have used a N95 and as good as it is, it is not coming close to the iPhone (now it has 3G anyway).
All I object to is the idea that the iPhone is a bad phone rather than simply a bad phone for some people because of the camera. (3g was the only way they did not take into account europe but thats fixed now)
WOOP mines activated!

re: The iPhone thread
I'm not saying it's a bad phone, just poorly organised and vastly overrated. Still, each to their own eh?
