Now the laptop running xp proff has picked up the new router with no problems and works fine. However the desktop running home edition just will not connect at all , yet when i change the router back to the old 2019 it connects first time..Now i configured the router with the laptop with my user name and password so i know the router is set up right.
Can anyone offer any advice as to what i need to do to fix this please.
thanks in advance.

which, proves theres no problem with the PC hardware....
its's an OS software setting problem...., now as can be seen, it appears your new to all this , so we could go all around the houses as the threads doing now, OR you can do the simple first thing...
(assuming your on XpSP2 and only have one network card), and just remove the network card with the problem setting, and just let windows re-install it and put all the generic entrys back in , and it should then just work.
start/right click "my computer"/manage/"device Manager"/"network Adaptors" find that offending network card and right click uninstall, done.
reboot or right click the top entry " the pcs name" and "scan for hardware changes" the network card will be Reinstalled and be given a totally seperate "local Area Connecion No." to what it had before (totally new and seperate entry in the registry)and just work fine as its auto set for "obtain an IP address Automatically"
a 2 minute job when you have the drivers already on the machine, simple ,easy and not over complicated for people somewhat new to LAN networking but long time PC users.
or you can go hunting around that networking LAN tcp/IP "obtain an IP address Automatically" setting if you prefer and change it to auto etc...
and BTW,
