Green campaigners storm coal train

Apparently they want this dirty fuel to be left in the ground. Well with the price of oil only heading one way I can't see that happening anytime soon. A tad childish to chuck the dirty stuff around I'd have thought too.

Perhaps next time they could rush the train head on while it was going at full speed that would sort one of the problems.

Well, she was concerned about the environment, I remember her in the mid 80's at international meetings talking about the dangers of global warming etc.

What you might have missed was she almost crippled the South Wales economy by closing countless coal mines and putting thousands on the dole.

The coal certainly all but stopped getting through then.

I'm sure it was something about them not being profitable, you know, costing more tax payers' money to subsidise them than was worthwhile in the real world.

It was part of her way of tackling the miners union which had become in her opinion too powerful and too militant. The coal being mined was uneconomic when compared to that which could be imported. Of course there's been a shift now with the price of oil, gas etc. so ironically the coal left in the ground which wasn't mined then is worth a lot more now. Having said that due to the way in which many pits were closed down it'll also cost a hell of a lot more to get out of the ground now. It always struck me as being shortsighted policy.

Err! Stopping and robbing a train is this not an offence? Some get 40 years for that, but they stole some money as well.

Hmm. On the one hand it's highly irresponsible, on the other it's only highly irresponsible protests that get attention these days.

If you're going to burn coal (and we are, or the lights go off) Drax is about the best place, it gets more energy out of the CO2 released than any other plant. The coal, of course, comes by ship and train from Russia or South America these days, rather than the Yorkshire pits Drax was built for...
