Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
Hi all!
I am nearly at the point of ripping my hair out over this issue!
I have tried google(ing) my problem, but there is no help for me
I have a 2 PC's that connect wirelessly to the router, but also a crossover ethernet lead from my PC to the other PC (server) for faster file transfer & remote desktop, now all was fine UNTIL I bought a shiney brand new Nvidia GeFORCE 6200 AGP graphics card........
Ever since I have had this installed, when I use Remote Desktop Connection, it uses 100% of my PC's processor, its laggy & takes ages to respond, and I have to spend 5 minutes trying to get the task manager up to force RDC to quit, this problem aint so bad when I knock my monitor res to 1024x768, but the problem is still there.
Has anyone heard of this before, or any ways to stop this problem as I am really getting cheesed off with it?
Thanks in advance for all your help, comments or anything else

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
Turn off various things in OPTIONS>EXPERIENCE and also set the OPTIONS>DISPLAY to a lower setting.... both in the remote connection options
Is hardware acceleration turned on full for the 6200?? Which OS are you using as the 6200 is quite a low end card but with extensive features, perhaps the OS has detected the features but doesn;t realise that the cards incapable at running them properly.

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
A little update & replies to your posts:
Jon T: Thanks for that link there mate, however, I have read all the pages, and although I regiestered over 2 hrs ago, still not got confirmation & the email to respond to activate account, and after reading it, tis strange cos I can actually run RDC, no errors, apart from it being like I'm trying to run XP on an old 386 with 256 colours lol!
bmxbandit: I originally used the drivers that came on the CD, but I upgraded to the latest drivers, that totally screwed things up, still the RDC problem, but no videos would work, it was like 1 frame every 2 seconds, to reverted back to original drivers & that sorted out my video problem, so nope, updated drivers didnt do the trick
Kymmy: yes all that was set anyway, I dont have any options set apart from the themes, which used to work 100% fine, just like I was sat at the computer when using RDC/
Hardware acceleration has not been changed from the default, and I can confirm that it is on, just like with my old ATI Radeon card. I am using XP Pro on both machines, have not had any probs since installing the Nvidia card, and you say its a "low end" card, well it cost me £59.99 (it is the 256MB version, AGP x8 set in BIOS) and if it ran my old ATI card OK (that was also 256MB & AGP x8) why wont it work with this 1?
There is no other problems with the card, I have even better 3dMark results with this than my old ATI card (just a shame I blew it up with my £300 PVR when I connected the S-Video lead with both switched on, yea I know that was stupid, and Im surprised that nothing else blew up too!) I just dont know what to do next, I dont wanna go back to my 64Mb PCI card, as I am quite attatched to this 1, online gaming is even better, and I would go as far as to say I hardly get any lag now, and the graphics are much more "realistic" (Halo online multi-player in particular) so I really do not know, but I have calmed down now after my hissy fit with it all, and all I can hope for is that an answer comes from somewhere!
Thanks for your contrbutions all!

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
Sorry to say but the last 6200/256mb agp I bought was 2 years ago and cost £25 and havn;t really been made for the last 12 months since the 7, 8 and geforce 9 series came out. The local computer shops still got a few of the 512mb versions for sale at less than £28 +vat.
It is a low end card (even when the 6 series was current) but as you've now specified that you;ve gone from ATI to Nvidia I'm more likely to ask did you totally remove the old ATI drivers (there's a an ATI cleaner utility on the AMD/ATI site) as some of the driver components can interfere with each other especialy when running directX components.
Remember that when you change vid cards it's not only the hardware that changes but also the drivers and the way that DX intergrates with them.

Yesh I used Your Installer! 2008 to remove all the software, then in windows did a search for ati*.* from C:\ and deleted it all, but if there is an official removal utility, i shall give it a go!
I have looked on their website, and even done a search, but couldnt find an ati cleaner, will do more searching though

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
UPDATE:
Earlier I sat at my server, and sucessfully managed to connect to my own pc (the 1 with the Nvidia in it) and it worked perfectly, so the problem lies on my pc somewhere, typical really as this ASROCK motherboard has been nothing but bloody trouble since I got the thing!
So saving all my pennies for a nice new AM2 motherboard for myself
Then its a new router I need as this BT Home hub is complete pants!

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
EDIT 2: So I took back the Nvidia 6200 256MB back to Maplin yesterday morning, then went to peesie world and bought a spanking new 512MB ATI Sapphire HD 2600PRO, got it home, tried doing a 3dMark test on it, very respectable results but the screen was all screwed up, while playing Halo online (1 of my new favourite online games) and all the textures was screwed up, psycodelic colours where there should've been solid colours, tried a game of Carmageddon, no graphics at all, googled the card yet again, only to find out that people was reporting that when they opened a video, the sound was there but no picture, so I opened up an XviD that I'd downloaded and guess what, yep no video, only sound.
so I took that back again, and the only lower-end AGP card they had was the Nvidia 6200 128MB card, so I got that.
Remote Desktop is still being a pain, but it aint as laggy & slow if I change my screen res to 1024 x 768, tis strange I know, but this so far is the only way to do it.
Now if I'd known yesterday what I know now, I could've saved myself a lot of time, trouble & money trying to sort this mess out!!
Anyway, ranting & raving over now, still havent solved my problem, but hey, I have a sorta work around for it, it aint perfect, but it will have to do for now!

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
Right, a final update here:
I found out it aint the actual screen resolution thats the problem, but the colour quality, if its on 32bit(my normal choice) then it doesnt work, but when changed to 16bit colour, it works all fine.
So what I did was make a PC program up that changes the colour quality to 16bit, automatically loads RDC, automatically connects me to the target pc without me having to do anything, and when RDC exits, the program then changes the colour quality back to 32bit, strange but it works perfectly!
Wish I knew that first as my current graphics card is being reported as being 133 degrees F, thats without any graphics intensive stuff running, that is the temperature it has just said, and I have been browsing this forum for the last hour, and when gaming, it goes upto 150degrees F, dunno why this 1 dont have a fan but the 256MB model does :S

Re: Remote Desktop Connection problems with Nvidia AGP
After exploring for two days why I could not longer access my main machine remotely, this is what I've discovered:
A simple driver rollback did the trick.
Here are the details of my scenario:
Replaced old Nvidia graphics card with the following:
GeForce 7300 GT 8X AGP, manufacturer of this card is BFGTech.
I WAS able to access other computers remotely from my host machine with the new card, prior to the rollback, but could NOT access the host remotely from other machines.
I went to the download drivers section of nvidia.com, and went to the lower part of the page, clicked on "Beta and Archived Drivers", under OTHER DRIVERS
Driver version that came with card- 175.16
I DID upgrade to the NEWEST driver, 175.19, to no avail
I then rollbacked to 169.21 which was most recent update prior to 175.16.
And VOILA I can now connect remotely. I find it ODD that neither the card manufacturer support people, nor Microsoft seem to know anything about this issue.
My system information:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name ********
