Well, he did make a remarkable recovery afterwards, so it was doubtful he was injured. Anyway, I'm not going to have a brilliant evening ruined. Holland outclassed Italy. They deserved the win

To prevent people from going off the field to play someone offside, apparently

Quite right!

Linky

Quote:
But what looked a desperately poor decision was, in fact, a brilliant piece of officiating, according to the chairman of Austria's refereeing commission Gerhard Kapl.

Kapl said Van Nistelrooy was played onside by Italy's Christian Panucci, who had been injured seconds earlier and was lying behind the goal when the Dutch striker scored.

He said the goal was "100% correct, without any doubt", quoting article 11.4.1. of the refereeing code that states "an opposing player cannot be offside when one of the last two defenders has left the field of play" - as in the case of Panucci.

Kapl said the rule was specifically designed to prevent a team causing a deliberate offside
It is, however, a grey area, I think.

But well done to the Dutch, great result.

You don't nor do you need permission to come back on in such circumstances, the linesman blew it, he'll be lucky to get another match this tournement.

A great result never the less, a triumph for decent football over the depressing Italian game

From what i've read he actually got it right. Someone posted this somehwere else, he's Dutch and obviously could have made it up but it looks legit.

11.11 DEFENDER LEGALLY OFF THE FIELD OF PLAY
A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position.

If thats the case the rules wrong and needs changing, it's stupid if a players injured and goes off the pitch himslef he's still active and playing people onside. He was clearly not just jumping out of play to get players offside. Surely we want no/fewer stoppages in the game and going off yourself would help, obviously not though, you need to wait for the referee to tell you to go off which would just waste more time.

Also i thought the Italians played some excllent football last night and deserved a couple of goals, they had more shots on target than the Dutch

Its one thing to criticise officials for making the wrong descision, but another thing to criticise them for making the right one.

You know where I got my info from, Graham Poll, yes he who gave some one 3 yellow cards during the world cup finals, so he could well be wrong again, what was I thinking listening to him, although I remember a liverpool Everton cup final when Stuart McCall scored Tony Cottee was of the pitch, shouldn't he have been given offside according to that Dutchman

I'm dubious about this one. According to the letter of the law (have a look around the web, the rule was applied correctly), RVN is onside, and it actually makes sense. If you can play someone offside by leaving the field, what's there to stop the defenders lining up on the goal line and stepping outside just before the free kick is taken?

I do think RVN is offside according to the spirit of the law, as the defender did not leave the field in order to play RVN offside. I think this rule needs looking at, but as it stands it's a valid goal.

BTW: The penalty shout: If RVN would have gone to ground, it would have been a stone wall penalty. He didn't but he clearly was denied a goal scoring opportunity, and didn't get a penalty. That's a bit silly as well isn't it?

Edit: UEFA supports decision

I read what Graeme Poll said in the paper as well, it doesn't suprise me that he doesn't know the laws of the game. I think the rule should be that the decision should be down to the referee and linesman as to whether the player leaving the field is doing so to gain an advantage or whether he is hurt/injured and then make the decision whether the offside should be given or not. The linesman made the right decision last night but the rule should be looked at because of circumstances like last night.

Keith Hackett thinks it was a goal but I tend to treat his comments with the contempt they deserve, as do all hammers fans

Re: The Euro 2008 thread

It's a shame really that the discussion over this goal dominates what was a great match, and a fantastic display of attacking football by Holland.

I think this link, which includes Holland's second goal, is more entertaining. That Sneijder goal gets better every time I watch it.
