Vista "Unidentified Network" problem

Hi,

I've just built a new budget PC, which I'm trying to network using a crossover cable to my laptop.
To make things simple, i've made a diagram:

New Desktop

Home LAN - Private Network
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Gateway Address 192.168.0.1


Laptop

Router - Public Network (Wireless connection)
IP Address 10.10.0.100
Gateway (Router's IP) 10.10.0.250

Unidentified Network - Public Network
IP Address 192.168.0.1



The Laptop and desktop have fine access to the internet.
The desktop allowed me to rename the network to Home LAN, and it retains the settings after unplugging/reboot.
However, the laptop does not retain the settings after a reboot, and will not let me rename the network from Unidentified network. I have tried with ICS on and off, and with static and automatic
IP addresses.
The Unidentified network is reverted to Public after a reboot or reconnection, whether or not I had changed it to private before.
The settings listed above are what I think should be right. The whole 10.10.0.x IP range was implemented when I read that having two networks on the 192.168.x.x range could cause conflicts. Changing it hasn't affected anything.

The network maps vista throws back at me are completely wrong:
The laptop thinks there's a hub between the laptop and desktop
The desktop thinks it connects to a "gateway" and says that it detects the laptop. but does not know where the laptop is on the network map.

Any ideas? My thoughts:
1. The problem has nothing to do with the router
2. The problem is probably with my laptop
3. If I bought a hub, and connected the laptop and desktop with it, the problem would probably go away.

The gateway would be the router.

My advice to you is that since there is nothing wrong, dont mess with anything.

That being said, why dont you use Wifi on the laptop?

For the laptop, the gateway is the router.
For the new desktop, the gateway is the laptop.

There is actually something wrong, maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough in my first post: because the network is unidentified, it does not save the settings, so every time I reboot, I need to set the network back to private again, and also file sharing between the computers is not working properly.

I already do use Wifi on the laptop, then use the laptop's ethernet port to share the internet connection to the desktop.

Why don't you use it on the new machine as well? Why are you looking at Internet Connection Sharing at all when you've got a router?

Ahh sorry, interpreted you wrong.

If you really so fussed, go buy a PCI Wifi card (dont use the USB stuff, its rubbish from what ive heard)

Because the new PC's a desktop, and doesn't have a wireless card.
By principle, I've already got everything I need to share the internet connection, I don't want to buy more things.

It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your connection then, since you can access the internet on both. In which case I wouldnt mess with it.

I'm having trouble sharing files between the computers, because the laptop loses all the settings on every reboot, because it is an "unidentified network".
