A lot of people are going to be mighty disappointed if the Tories ever get back in, because I'd like to bet things will only change superficially, if at all, just like they did when Labour got in ten years ago.

It's possible.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it won't be and they'll have learnt from NuLabour's mistakes, but we won't know until we get them into government.
I'm certainly not like the Labour Luvvies who went wild about TB as though he was some saviour who could do no wrong.
I have my own ideas as to what the conservative party should be and stand for, sometimes it matches the party line, sometimes it doesn't.
I'm certainly not affraid to point out where mistakes are made simply because I vote for them.

I totally agree with what your saying Xaccers, its just that I remember this atmosphere in the dying days of the Major government, people just thought everything would change with a new government. In the 80s I voted Tory and grew to despise them, then it seems to me history has repeated itself, where by I voted Labour in the last three elections, and I've come to feel the same way about this present shower. I've sadly come to the conclusion that all politicians, once in power will say or do almost anything to hang on to that power, sadly I'm not sure what the answer is, but the constant cycle of Labour then Tory and on and on doesn't seem to be working, for me at least.

The irony is I didn't want to vote for Blair in the last election, but when I looked at old Dracula I took the route of lesser of two evils. Now as far as I'm aware, all the old Tories from the 80s and 90s are have been put out to pasture, so from my point of view they are looking more electable.

Re: A record 164,635 people were granted British citizenship last year
Now there's a surprise:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7415261.stm
Apparently the Office for National Statistics had estimated 43,000 short-term migrants in England and Wales between June 2004 and June 2005 but the committee claimed that was implausible since there were well over 200,000 new Nat. Ins. no. registrations in London alone!
The committee said "statistics for 2005 on international migration were based on "a very small sample" of interviews with 2,965 people entering the UK and 781 who left.
That'd be about right!
