We're sorry for ****ing on your party

Manchester United's homecoming parade following next week's Champions League final has been postponed after violence flared in the city on Wednesday.
|
Quote:
Opponents Chelsea have also had their plans for a parade affected.
The club wanted to hold a parade on Thursday, the day after the final, if it won, but the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London and local councils said a parade on a weekday evening "would bring severe rush hour disruption and chaos to west London".
|
It's a sad state of affairs when a city can't celebrate one of their clubs winning a major trophy

Two seperate problems though. It's sad that Manchester parade has been cancelled because of a small minority of 'fans' from another club. London's traffic is bad enough without a parade causing gridlock, AFAIK Chelsea have turned down the offer of a parade on Sunday.

Agree - no football fan here but why should their parade be cancelled due to the activities of a bunch of Scottish drunken yobs??
If an English team had gone to Glasgow and behaved likewise we'd never have heard the end of this... I mean the English are all drunken thugs and the Scots are all hard done by, long oppressed Celtic angels aren't they.....

You're missing my point - which was that sweeping generalisations about ANY group are pathetic. These ones happened to be Scottish but that doesn't make all Scots yobs or angels for that matter. The same applies to the English although you wouldn't think so sometimes given the media led hysteria...

Amid the chaos, Strathclyde Police lost control of Glasgow city centre for more than an hour last night as hundreds of English and Scots football hooligans rioted through streets crowded with terrified shoppers
.
By the time police brought calm to the city centre, at around 5pm, more than 100 hooligans had been arrested. A further 23 were arrested at Hampden. Sporadic skirmishes continued throughout the city, but by then police were dealing rapidly with the trouble.
|
Now consider there were between 150 and 200,000 Scottish fans in Manchester. There were 46 arrests out of that total, most of the fans were unware of the trouble until the following day.
And when you think over double the number of fans were arrested remember that the laws on arrest are completely different in Scotland than England. Out the 46 arrests only 11 have been charged (so far). Out the 100 they would all have been charged.

To be fair the police were hardly in a postion to make many arrests at the height of the trouble were they! From what can be seen on the CCTV they were totally outnumbered by rampaging yobs any number of whom could probably been arrested at that time had they not been part of a large and aggressive crowd.
BTW as I thought I made clear in my earlier post, I'm not suggesting that all the Rangers fans were responsible, we all know it's always a minority who spoil it for the rest of us. The truth is that is it was drunken yobs who were to blame and I stand by my remark that we certainly wouldn't have heard the end of it had it been English fans doing likewise in Glasgow.

You mad? Every single person that was in the city that night knew what was happening - It was even common knowledge at the stadium during and after the match.

Were you aware of the incident in Glasgow a few years back. You know, the one where English fans rampaged through Glasgow on a Saturday afternoon?
You must have, I mean if they did that you'd never have heard the end of it
Or possibly it was just forgotten about and not really mentioned that much.

Not the last time I checked. Out the people I know who were there the vast majority didn't know what had happened until well after the game.

Sorry - I have no wish to upset anyone or whatever, but why is this thread title allowed after Paul's announcement reiterating the use of asterisks? Admittedly a bit of a sore point for me after getting an infraction for using asterisks in a post.

Not trying to cause bother so please don't take umbrage.
