Master Reboot Effects on net speed

Hi all,
This may be a very stupid question, but I thought I'd ask. I've had Virgin MEdia Broadband for about 3 years now. I'm on the 4mb package which I think has been uplifted. I purchased a new pc in Jan, and only until about a month ago have I experienced good net speeds of around 400kb.
However after about a week on pc probs, I've had to do a master reboot. The net speeds today have gone back down to around 40-60kb which was what they were when I first got the pc.

I was wondering if master rebooting my pc can cause the speeds to revert back to what they were, and are uplifts in speeds lost as a result???

Any advice or help would be great, been a very frustrating week with pc's, I hate Vista!!

Thanks for your time

Try that speed test and then post back the results. I think more users may be able to help if you gave your area, and your modem type also.

Re: Master Reboot Effects on net speed

The results are:
Sun, 18 May 2008 15:21:21 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 11508 ms = 89 KB/sec, approx 733 Kbps, 0.72 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 14716 ms = 69.6 KB/sec, approx 574 Kbps, 0.56 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 11665 ms = 87.8 KB/sec, approx 723 Kbps, 0.71 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 25114 ms = 81.5 KB/sec, approx 672 Kbps, 0.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 676 Kbps, 0.66 Mbps

I live in Birmingham in Small Heath.

Cable Modem is Motorolla SB5100 Surfboard.

No probs with the speeds before the reboot, seems do have slowed down quite a bit!

You could try this.

Download this TCP Optimizer and set to your speed i.e. 40000 for 4Mb

Re: Master Reboot Effects on net speed

Just installed it and re-ran the test:
Sun, 18 May 2008 15:57:21 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 2324 ms = 440.6 KB/sec, approx 3631 Kbps, 3.55 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 2153 ms = 475.6 KB/sec, approx 3919 Kbps, 3.83 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 2200 ms = 465.5 KB/sec, approx 3836 Kbps, 3.75 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 15771 ms = 129.9 KB/sec, approx 1070 Kbps, 1.04 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3114 Kbps, 3.04 Mbps

I'm guessing this is a good sign??? Havent downloaded anything yet but will updated with progress. Many thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

Yep, that's 4Mb (Look at the first 3 chunks, the last one slowed down for some reason)

Looks fixed to me
