Re: Please clear this up download speed

Depends on Browser, location of file E.g. UK - Eu - America ? oh and not forgetting time of day on VM with there traffic shaping !

Ideally though I think between 1.90MB/Sec and 2.10MB/Sec

Re: Please clear this up download speed

yea understand that, but the question i'm asking is what speeds should i get. if i download test file from vm ( 4 at the same time ) i dont even reach 1 meg. vm advert was for 20 meg bb so that does not mean 20meg download. i know i have not been trafic shaped , i know my computers ok, i know i'm not using a rooter. so for what thet are offering 20 meg bb should that not mean download speed as well

I get the same problem. But its between 4pm and midnight. Am on 20MB but get trafficed down to 3-4MB between these times it sucks I know. As for download speed it should be between what I said for 20mb BB. 1.90MB/Sec to 2.10MB/Sec Anything between thats fair enough but less that 1MB/sec download is poor for 20MB thats like half the speed m8.

Try this one and post what you get. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php

Re: Please clear this up download speed

Internet speeds are measured in Mega Bits per second, NOT Mega Bytes. That means that you can't download a 20 Megabyte file in 1 second, it's 10x less than that, in theory it'll be closer to 10 seconds.

Of course it all depends on everything working at optimal performance, actual speeds will probably be lower yadda yadda yadda.

refraction is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Please clear this up download speed

correct, the formula to get a theoretical max is as follows

20480mbps / 8bits = 2560k/sec (2.5MB/sec)

this is the RAW transfer speed, not accounting for overheads due to the packet headers etc. I can usually hit 2300-2400k/sec or so, which sounds about right.

I would complain if you're only getting 2.3mb/s on the 20mb/s line.
Now if you're getting 2.3MB/s on a 20Mb/s line that's OK.

It's no wonder people are getting confused.

Download 4 files simultaneously, from a fast source/ sources .Add up your 4 speeds, multiply by 8, divide by 1024. That gives your speed in Mbps.

You'll find file download via Internet Explorer with show the download speed in either B/s, KB/s or MB/s. You'll need to convert then to Mb/s, to compare to your XL 20Mb/s connection.

L@@k here; http://www.speedguide.net/conversion.php and put your added together download speed in the correct box Kilobytes (KB) or Megabytes (MB) on the right hand side, then hit calculate button and it will convert to megabits (mb) mddle box on the left hand side.

Hope this helps,

bits and bytes here is the order:
1 bit = a single digit, either 1 or 0
8 bits = 1 byte, a combination of 1's and 0's
1024 Bytes = 1 KB (kilobyte)
1024 Kilobytes = 1 MB (megabyte)
1024 Megabytes = 1 GB (gigabyte)

Re: Please clear this up download speed

To inject some humour here's some another attempt to define the units

http://xkcd.com/394/

Note NTL/Virgin use 1024*1000 for download and 1000 for upload - on "4Mb" service the modem is configured to limit to 4096000 bits/s download, upload is 400000 bits/s
