4MEG Virgin Media Broadband Constantly Running Slow

I am a virgin media customre paying for the 4 meg virgin media broadband service, for the last THREE months ive been getting 2meg speeds from my 4 meg connection!!!

I am a network engineer and need to use my internet to dial my vpn so i can do my own work, and i am getting frustrated at all of this virgin media ****! They give me 2 meg speeds no matter what, and then to add insult to injury i get that stupid traffic management **** which caps me even lower down to 1 meg.

I couldnt care less about that traffic management rubbish, thats jus a consequencce of being a customer in a country where money comes first! But what reallt cheeses me off is the fact i CANNOT get my full 4meg connection, no matter what i only get 2meg speeds.

I have tried everything. gone through multiple routers, called up virgin to absolutely no luck whatsoever!!

At the moment i am running my modem into my endian firewall, but i get exactly the same speeds when i connect directly to a computer or laptop. I have verified my modem is set up to use the 4 meg speeds, i have already verified my modems downstream frequency is 402750000 Hz. Them stupid people i call customer services have told me my connection is all fine and that evrything is working well wen clearly it is not !!!!!

Here are the results of a speed test i done earlier. This is test when i was not capped, all of my speed tests are like this when i am not capped, this is my MAXIMUM speed !

When those nutcases do cap me (everyday basically) here is the result:

If you are thinking that you do not trust these speed tests, my maximum download rate when trying to download ubuntu off the virgin media servers wa about 240KiloBYTES per second, same with all downloads, whether news bin, or http or bittorrent.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME, I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!!!!

If it helps i live in cardiff, in the fairwater area. (CF5 POSTCODE)

THANKS

Re: 4MEG Virgin Media Broadband Constantly Running Slow

Hi mate, having the same problem with my 20meg line, perhaps reading my thread will help you as lots have gave suggestions... although not worked for me it may for you also have you tried TCPOptimizer from speedguide.net?
As cleshe said.. need to know the model of your modem also mate. Best thing to do would be to run a netstat -a and a ping to bbc.co.uk and post results here along with your modem info and network setup if you have one router/wired etc
Hopefully can get you sorted

The 250 is far more modern . There is an excellent chance that your"older model" cannot accept the latest software upgrades. Not the speed update, the normal operating system upgrades that keep the system running.
Changing back to an older model modem because it worked once is like fetching the Sinclair computer down from the loft and expecting it to perform satisfactorily now.
Many people had continuing speed loss after the outage in October or November of last year.I certainly did. It was cured in my case by my modem being replaced by a 255 from a 120.
Prior to this replacement I had been told many times by Virgin there was nothing wrong with the 120 modem I had, including by the first "engineer " who came out, who never even looked at the modem, just told me that Stafford had speed problems ongoing everywhere.
The second engineer looked at my modem, said, "oh one of them, they're useless since the last update, can't accept the new software" , replaced it and my speeds magically improved back to where they should have been.
You may well have other issues, but I would certainly recommend re- attaching the 250 modem as a first effort.

Re: 4MEG Virgin Media Broadband Constantly Running Slow

too me that looks like your on a 2mb config go to 192.168.100.1 in your browser look in your logs and look for something beginning with cm

like i get SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-4096-384
meaning virgin gave me a 4mb config for my modem just check what yours is if u can't find what it is somewhere on an ambit modem u can check bitrate

Re: 4MEG Virgin Media Broadband Constantly Running Slow

ermm this is the only part of the log that has much to do with a config file.

Code:
"Retrieved TFTP Config cmreg-mota4100-light.cm SUCCESS "
Ill attach my latest logs now.

I would blame it on my modem but my newer modem has the same speeds as this 3100.

I just prefer using my sb3100 as it can be screwed to my server rack lol.

Have you tried connecting a different computer and see if that helps?

Using the newsgroup at

virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

might be a better bet.

These look like frequencies.
The same as
Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz

Config files should be

20meg
Bit Rate
20480000 bits/sec
Bit Rate
768000 bits/sec

10meg
Bit Rate
10240000 bits/sec
Bit Rate
512000 bits/sec

4meg
Bit Rate
4096000 bits/sec
Bit Rate
384000 bits/sec

And I can't think of 2meg off top of my head and too tired to work it out.

HTH

If you believe CS to all be idiots (and I hope it was TS that you phoned and not CS?), why don't you try following some of the advice that's been offered here instead?

In particular, as suggested by Mick, you could try "Using the newsgroup at virginmedia.support.broadband.cable". It's free, relatively pain-free and posts usually get dealt with fast.

However one of the first things they'll ask you to do is connect directly to the newer modem (yes, I know you don't believe it'll make a difference), go into the config page and make a note of the values that'll be described something like:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate
Maximum Upstream Data Rate
Signal to Noise Ratio
Downstream Power Level
Upstream Power Level
If you do that and post the values here, you might get further suggestions.

I'm not sure it's wise to ask but how come you've got to pay Virgin extra to call them using voip?
