Re: auto backup

The standard windows backup will let you select specific files or folders to backup, and let you backup to a hard disk. You'd be able to schedule the task daily.

Re: auto backup

I've got a NAS drive that came with a copy of Memeo Autoback - DON'T TOUCH IT - it's utter rubbish!

I now use NTI Shadow (trial available) - it can copy a changed file / folder on the fly with the ability to make a number of previous copies.

PM me if you want to ask any questions about it!

Re: auto backup

I use, and can recommend, SyncBack which I have used for quite a while in conjunction with an external hard drive. It came in very handy when my old computer bit the bullet in January.

Reviews and free down load.

Thought I'd see what this one had to offer - it's very good - more configurable than NTI Shadow and more reporting when a backup is in progress.

Just one thing - can it do "on the fly" backups - i.e. detect when a file has changed and then back it up?

Re: auto backup

cheers guys, on the fly would be good, but not essential, mainlly dont want to lose the bulk of my images and songs. songs can get put back as I got the CD's but thats time consuming.

Photos however would be greatly lost. thats why I am looking for a good backup utility just to back up to a new internal drive, as it is neater.

Will have a look at joglynne's solution when I get the drive.

thanks

Rob, I could not find the standard windows backup scedualer

Write your own. I just wrote a backup utility for one of our customers applications that they rent from us. It's specifically for that software, but it does let them choose how often to backup (between 1 and 8 hours).

I haven't found a way to make the free version backup on the fly and I suspect it needs the SE version to have that ability.

The first time I ran the free version ( now using v3.2.14) it seemed to take forever to create the copy on my external HD but this did include about 1500 photos and images and nearly 15 years worth of files. ( OK I admit that I'm a pack rat ) I now have it set to do a daily backup of all my additions and alterations and it does it in the blink of an eye. Once a week I get it to do a full system sync and again this takes no time at all.

To be honest I forget I've even got it running, it just works seamlessly in the background.

I don't know if this will help but have a look at this link http://lifehacker.com/software/geek-...ive-147855.php
