Re: free web space from virgin media
Hi all,
im new to cable forums & new to building websites but i am going to launch a gamming clan soon, i have built most of my clan site but im stuck on a few things.
1. I want/need the info/code to build a forum on my site. (i dont want to use a forum site, i want my very own forum on my site)
2. I want/need a comment box on my site that only allows registered members to use it & i want it to display the last 5 or 6 comments posted on it & i want it to make all the posted comments read only to the next users so no one can edit what some one else has posted.
3. i want/need a secure login & register.
If any one can advise me or give me the codes/code generators required for these items please do so.

Re: free web space from virgin media
It's not free, but this forum uses http://www.vbulletin.com/
Have a look at http://www.phpbb.com/ for a free forum solution though. As long as you have some webspace that allows you to use your own PHP scripts, then you can use either of the above.
Also, check what your webhost provides. Some have forum software available as part of their packages.
Note: Virgin, AFAIK, don't support any scripts on your webspace, and don't provide forum software.

Re: free web space from virgin media
You can't do that kind of advanced thing with HTML, you need PHP and CGI, preferably MySQL.

Re: free web space from virgin media
As far as I know, Virgin Media webspace will only work with stuff like HTML, no scripting or database functions are supported - sorry ..

Re: free web space from virgin media
You can't run PHP script from your VM web space.
MySQL is a database system for use with scripting languages like PHP. All forums need a database system to be able to hold any information.

as far as I know, what you will need to do is register a domain name, then pay for it to be hosted. The hosting service usually comes with several extras, including templates for running forums.
It isn't that expensive to do this, as little as £15 a year can be possible...
btw, you don't 'join' mysql, it is a application for managing databases - the hosting packages I mentioned usually include access to mysql as part of the deal

Re: free web space from virgin media
it sounds like your very new to all this and so your going to have to do a LOT of reading and learning.
for you, your best bet is to install an all in package on your local lan machines and play with it there, then transfer to a payed for co-location server later once you know enough and want more speed for your users.
Apache2Triad, that can be found and simply installed on any of your VM cable LAN machines as a self contained unit on a windows OS, and has all that you might need ,except OC in your case a ready made forum, but you want to learn how to make that from scratch yourself you say....
http://apache2triad.net/
do a search on here for webserver and you might find some more information as regards rebol and other scripting languages and help, theres quite a bit....

Re: free web space from virgin media
well theres your problem, to learn this stuff properly, a good html book and an editor is what you need, DW is fine after you know the ins and outs ,but a good basic book/PDF is your best option long term.
everyone needs to start somewere so good luck in your trials and errors, and there will be lots.
the all in one is that http://apache2triad.net/ its got everything you need, web server PHP SQL and the rest in one simple install package.
its put together so you install on your C: drive and from then on your machine starts all these packages up and you have in effect a full set of servers running right there on your PC under your desk to mess around with.
just make sure you have enough HD space...
read the http://apache2triad.net/ site help files etc, it will become clear.
