His wife and three-year-old son Barney died there but London-born Mr Greenman survived six different death camps.

After Buchenwald was liberated in 1945, he dedicated the rest of his life to telling the story of the Holocaust.

hmm.. If people are interested in in finding out more, you should consider reading some of the books by Primo Levi - I think to describe them as an 'interesting' read would be wrong, and belittle what everyone there went through - I think they're more of an important read, than anything else.

BBC Jerusalem correspondent Tim Franks, who interviewed Mr Greenman in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, said he literally lived behind bars there - with bars on the windows and his letterbox sealed - as he had been targeted by neo-Nazis.

It should have ended with the death of Nazi-Germany. Here is someone who already lost all their family to the death camps, who survived, and yet had to continue to experience the hatred

The first thing you notice about Leon Greenman's large but shabby terraced house in Ilford is that it has mesh shutters. He had them put up 10 years ago, soon after the National Front threw bricks through the windows. At least we can take some sort of sliver-lining in how Greenman kept fighting the racism.

I think the saddest thing is that he never found anyone or the heart to remarry.

I hate to think he was alone for so long but then it probably meant that he had the resources and time to keep telling the story.

To be honest, obviously he loved his family, and the best way he could honour them is to tell the world the truth, otherwise if it continued to go unpublicised, they die a meaningless death.

Hes destiny in life per se, was to reveal the truth.
