Seems like it and it wouldn't be the first time would it. They'll just say the ends justified the means.

Indeed - and I expect some of this is due to the fact that their annual charge on non doms of 30k a year hasn't bought in what they expected - so they need to get the extra money they have lost from the capital gains changes somewhere else.

Re: HMRC tax probe into offshore accounts
Give this government enough time and i swear to god they will find a way to tax us for breathing. End of the day if they suspect anything dodgy then prosecute but don't go invading privacy to do it. Just lately this government seems to be treading on privacy left right and centre and then having the cheek to try and tell us it's not invading privacy. God please give us the chance of an election so we can get this bunch of money grabbing, privacy invading and rights violating bunch of grubs out of power. Then we just have to hope the next lot will for once be better.

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) paid the informant 100,000 pounds ($196,500) for the bank details of scores of wealthy Britons, The Sunday Times said, adding that the records had been stolen from the tax haven.

The govt is actually buying stolen goods with the taxpayers money?!
