Start here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT

Read this and see if you're supported. Having the right model number may not be enough as each router has been revised over time/Try to find what version of DD-WRT you'll never and the flashing method.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

Then move on to their wiki for tweaks and tips on topics ranging for VPN to VLANing.

Some serious reading there .
Mainly looking for something that can control bandwidth on each port and set time limits on use.

DD-WRT can do this in its QoS settings.

True but that tomatoe firmware does look tasty...

Might just install it and give those grease monkeys in my office a hard time

Tomatoe looks like what you want and pretty easy to play with.

DD-WRT can be a pain in the butt at times.... However ....

» Routers that are known to work with Tomato:
Linksys WRT54G v1-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4, WRT54GL v1.x, WRTSL54GS (no USB support)
Buffalo WHR-G54S, WHR-HP-G54, WZR-G54, WBR2-G54, WBR-G54, WZR-HP-G54, WZR-RS-G54, WZR-RS-G54HP, WVR-G54-NF, WHR2-A54-G54, WHR3-AG54
Asus WL500G Premium (no USB support), WL500GE
Sparklan WX6615GT, Fuji RT390W, Microsoft MN-700

Not sure if WRT54GS v6 is supported.

THUT THUT : You didn't read http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices did you :p

Looks like the v6 version is limited by less memory - only the mini version of DD-WRT works.

Re: DD-WRT ....What do you know ?

So does not look like Tomatoe or standard DD-WRT will work on my router

Check your router carefully for the serial number and version number.

This is the reason why I bought the WRT54-GL specifically as it has always supported flashing. The buffalos are also wrt friendly.

Instead of using the router have you considered using an old pc as a test with something like smoothwall / ipcop or shorewall ?

They have some pretty nifty stuff like for example anti-virus on the fly which is pretty cool.
