Hey, what do tech support actaully 'say' when you call up every month and complain about the slow speeds, do they blame it on your computer, offer to get a technician out or give you a solution that lasts about 2 hours and then its a problem again?

Don't worry you are not the only one

Both vnunet.com and trustedreviews.com both thought the same (and I'm sure there are others)

It would be nice, but if it was an upgrade, I doubt they would have charged £10 extra in the trial areas for it.

Also, anyone on the 50Mb service is going to definately need a new modem (DOCSIS 3.0)

What kind of upstream rate would be required for a 50meg service? 1.5mb?

I know for the trial it was 1.5Mb but I suppose it all depends on what Virgin think the network can handle. Hopefully it will closer the 2Mb mark

I only called them once, they said it was an area fault.

I am not calling them again as they don't know what they are talking about and I refuse to pay a premium rate phone charge to tell my ISP their service doesn't work.

As soon as I can be bothered deciding on who to go with, I'll be moving on. I already have a BT line. But it means changing TV services to Sky as well, so it's a big jump that I don't have the time to mess about with just yet.

Unfortunately with any call centre, it does depend on who you get through to

For area faults id check http://status-cable.virginmedia.com and prove tech support wrong, i hate them mate, but id recommend u badger them to get a tech out to you, if a problem is found in the connection you get refunded for the calls.

Virgins still using EuroDOCSIS1.1 on the network just now, all the 250 series are capable of E Docsis 2 and 1 so theyre fine for upto 55.6meg downstream and 30meg upstream.

EuroDOCSIS 1.1 is capable of 55.62Mbit/s D/S and 10.24Mbit/s U/S

So the only thing they really need to do is sort out oversubscription on ubrs in key areas along with upgrading some network equipment.

DOCSIS 3 would mean some FTTH implementations, virgin are cheapos theyd never spend that kind of money on ftth installs!! lol

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

If you actually read anything technical about the 50Mb trial it IS DOCSIS 3 they are using.

HERE for instance

As far as I can see there is nothing in the DOCSIS 3 spec that says you have to have FTTH

But on this case, i know as much as you.

In relation to rollout, as per list for 20mb i dont think it was totaly accurate either, im on the uddingston ubr and it was said that it wouldnt be done until half way through rollout, even though it was done as of 1st of may last year, so even when the schedule is released it may not be fully accurate.

best way to check is on 1st march or whenever end of feb check your modem config
i was forced to downgrade from 20 to 4mb after problems and im still having problems on 4mb in swansea, i cant seem to get anywhere, they told me its over subscription but one bloke told me the problem will be sorted at end of March, another said that the server im on wasnt due to get upgraded and needs to put in for permission to get upgraded and could take months, im really annoyed ive had probs since end of Nov 2007

I've still got a 120 ntl modem, will I need to get it changed for me to have 10mb when my area is upgraded?

Well Northampton is in the running to trial 100Mb through fibre provided by H2O (Using the sewage networks, giving a whole new meaning to crap quality and laying a cable!!) if they do get that and it is a different provider Virgin won't see my heels for dust!!

Too damn right but unfortunately for me it's not likely to extend as far as NN10.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

So has the plan of areas been made yet? I have still not been upgraded but am very much looking forward to it. I live near Reading, Berkshire.
Though I'm not sure if it will happen to us. Because a couple of months ago my Dad complained about something (don't remember what) and now even though we're paying for M, we're getting L for a year. So I'm not sure. But I'm trying to convince him to start paying for L once the free year has ended.
